iDrive Photos!

Hi all,

I have put together a gallery of iDrive photos from my 2007 120d LCI hatch. Enjoy!

Wonderful info.
Also appears to answer an old question on this forum about when the screen "pops up". You can program it to open or not open until you activate certain functions. There was early speculation that the screen always poped up when the ignition was on but that looks like a setting that you can turn off.
Very nice, thanks

Thank you for taking the time to do that! The more information that trickles through to me, the more I can't wait for my 1-er to arrive.

Thanks for posting the gallery, it looks complicated but really fantastic. I still can't believe don't get it in the interest of maintaining a pure driving experience. Honestly, do you think people in the 70's wouldn't have gotten this on their 2002 if it was offered as an option.

Yes, probably 100% of them. Don't think the nav would work real well, though.

Thanks everyone.

I'm glad you all like the pictures. I posted them because there isn't really a good collection of real-world iDrive pictures floating around.

The nice thing about the iDrive in the 1er is that you can put the screen down and *completely* ignore it - and enjoy the drive - unlike in all the other BMWs which have the double hump dashboards.

I've noticed that on the other BMWs, turning the screen 'off' actually just makes the screen go black, but it is *still backlit*... crazy. With the 1er, when the screen is off it is *off* and out of view.

I initially didn't like the idea of a popup screen but after using it I prefer it over the alternatives.

Cheers,

Paul

Everything still functions it's just that you can't see it. If you need to see something to change it, then the screen will need to be displayed (service info, graphic equaliser, radio station selection, etc).

With the screen down you can:
- mute & adjust volume, change tracks/stations with the stereo controls
- use voice commands
- use PDC
- dial the phone with voice control
- navigate (voice commands)
- use the favourite buttons

Hope this helps.

Awesome, and I assume a click of the menu or wheel opens it up again?

Yes. If the screen is closed you can open it by:
- pressing the menu button
- pressing the iDrive controller
- pressing the steering wheel button (if configured to do so)

I've just added a few more pics from the hidden diagnostics menu - not that you can do much with the info...

To get there, from the main menu:
- press controller down for 15 seconds, then release
- rotate controller right, right, right, left, left, left, right, left, right
- press controller down briefly

It's all greek to me, but it looks funky!

Cheers,

Paul

I think it's a great system, but not $2100 great. The biggest downside to me is that the navigation system still requires a DVD. That is sooooo 5-years-ago.

My GF's infiniti has a built-in hard drive for the nav. The hard drive would be less expensive than a DVD optical drive!

Yeah I'd like to see them use a 4gb flash drive, it would be faster, cheaper, more reliable, and you can mail them. Most of the time spent accessing the DVD is seek time (the reek, reek noise) which is really slow on an optical drive.

Having said that you can use the dvd drive for mp3's, so it's not all bad.
