Problems after battery replacement

Hello,

My BMW E91 diesel has been parked without a working battery for about 2 months. Just recently a new battery has been mounted and registered. But now the car won’t start. It turns but the engine doesn’t fire. And all kind of error codes pop up. The main one is that there is a problem with the diesel pump.
All was fine when i parked the car. Is there a reason that this happens after a long time without a battery of do I just have bad luck and the pump broke after being unused for a lengthy period? What can I try?

Thanks,

Dutchsea

Hi, the codes still need to be cleared. The temperature has been around 50 Fahrenheit/10 Celsius.

You should clear those codes first, cycle ignition and try to start it again.
Then read the codes again.

For starter I would check battery voltages at the end points of where
the hot lines feed out from the battery distribution block.

Succes! I read the error codes and during the automatic vehicle identification by the software I got an unknown error: “No voltage at terminal 15 or U-batt is less than 9 Volt”

That got me thinking and I checked the various terminals at my battery. And yes, one cable was not properly connected. It must have been the power line that feeds (probably amongst other things) the diesel pump.

So after the AAA changed my battery that cable was not connected anymore the car didn’t start, next the AAA diagnostic tool showed the error “diesel pump faulty” and the guy concluded that this pump was broken and offering to have my car towed to a garage for repair.

I am happy I decided to postpone that tow and started looking for the cause myself because as after reconnecting the loose cable everything was fine again. (I could leave my car at the spot it broke down as it was parked at my sisters place.)

Thanks for your help!
