IMO, yes it is worth it. It offers the next level of technology and control of all the major functions.

I'm definitely getting it.

Exactly it depends on what you want. If you want the Nav then you have to. Personally I dont think its worth it. Besides nav you still have same functionality you just access it through the turn signal stalk. I wont be getting it.

I have iDrive in my 335. It is a love/hate thing for me. The Nav is very awkward to program and doesn't have the basic capabilities of a $200 Garmin.

OTOH, it looks great and how could you own a $50K car without Nav??

I may go minimalist on the 1er and keep the money for some 19s.

I thought long and hard about including Nav in an order. But I decided against it because of the way I use a Nav system. Most of the daily travel doesn't require Nav - but when I need it, it's because I have a complex route laid out. I drive from Point A to Point Z with a whole bunch of waypoints in between - which the Nav has to account for. And the internal Nav can't do waypoints. I have to get an aftermarket unit for that.

And not many aftermarkets do it either. I think the big Nuvis do it and older 'real' GPS units like the 2720.

I am occasionally reminded of how two automotive enthusiasts can be coming from two very different places.

Nav?

Exige - no. But I would slap a Nuvi in there.

3 Series - absolutely.

I was bouncing back and forth with the iDrive. I'm not getting it and just buying a Nuvi 680 :headbang:

For me it is. Big part of that descision is that I'm doing Euro delivery, and Navi is a must when in such unfamiliar territory, IMO.
Additionally, the new iPod interface is great.

Back on topic, the iDrive is kinda cool. I've driven loaners that had it and a buddy has a 7-Series with it. It takes some time to get down the learning curve and it takes a few extra 'motions' to do some simple things, but overall it's interesting.

My kids thought it was awesome, for what that's worth...

Not just no, but hell no! iDrive is one of the reasons I got rid of my 335i. Total waste for someone like me. If you travel to work and are constantly being forced to go to new places, it could be worth it.

But if you are like me and drive to work, home, the store, out around town, and travel a few times a year, its a total waste.

iDrive is not intuitive, and the interface is pretty lame IMO. There are so many better things to spend your option money on. Heck, for another grand, you could buy the Premium package, which to me is something that I'd get a ton more use out of.

iDrive will drive you nuts when it shows a warning:
"Tire pressure low" (it was 2psi low)
"BMW assist malfunction" (this happened to me about once a month for no reason)
"Outside temperature +37 degrees. Drive with caution" (this one was the most annoying of all)

I got my 135i with only Sport and Hifi, because I don't need all the extra crap. I just want a nice driving car that I can enjoy without the interface that will pop up everyday and annoy the F out of me.

[/rant]

edit: At least the 3 series iDrive was integrated into the dash. The 1 series iDrive looks like a pop up SAFC reject.

NO

I am on my third BMW (545i), first one with idrive. Idrive is easy to use, don't listen to all those critics. My problem is getting the idrive software updates. Everytime there is some problem with my car, my dealer always seems to think an update will fix the problem. The thing is it takes them days sometimes to do the updates, it gets annoying. I can't even tell you what version software they are on now, too many lost count. I will never buy another BMW with idrive, unless they do major upgrades and fullprooth the idrive system. Being able to get no idrive, norrowed my decision down to the 335i and 135i.

Also, if you plan on keeping your car past the 4/50,000 warranty, I highly suggest you DON'T get idrive.
