iPod USB Option

So I noticed the iPod USB integration is a $400 option. Is this really worth it with there already being an AUX input standard? Sure, I realize you get artist and song title on your Navi screen, and you can control it with the steering wheel buttons--but, $400? I dunno about that. Thoughts? :iono:

It is a total rip in my book. My whole Kenwood deck in my current car does all that and it cost $200 total!!! That alone is the most overpriced option in my book, with HD radio second. If you are paying $800 for the upgraded stereo those should be include no question.

Yes its expensive, but its one of those options that I would regret not having. Personally I dont like the idea of aftermarket mods on a brand new car, but maybe after a couple of years I would consider it.

Your talking full integration for 400 bucks i wouldn't complain at the end of the day you paid 200 bucks for aftermarket but you dont have steering integration which cost bucks to modify but then again aftermarket quality is so much better. The way i see it i paid 400 bucks for my Premier Pioneer 9800 BT Deck and it isn't integrated with my car but the quality is superb but the way i see it, 400 bucks is a good price for not altering the stock dash!

It wasn't that long ago that reaching 14 inches or so to the stereo face plate wasn't a big deal, especially in the Ultimate Driving Machine with driver oriented controls. Now it's considered too much work and we need to use the controls on the steering wheel.

iPod integration and HD reception should have been part of the optional upgrade: either stock, or spend more and get all the goodies.

Oh, and it is "You Are" or "You're."

"Your" is possessive.

The reason controls are put on the steering wheel and not the dash is not because it is too much work, but for a more important reason. It is done for the same reason Ferrari has their settings on a steering wheel! The reason being to keep the driver focused on the road. Both hands on the steering wheel allow for less chance of mistake. (All Enzo's have paddle shifters so your hands never leave the steering wheel and ofcourse faster shifts).

Look at an F1 steering wheel sometime it's a mini-command center. Some crazy technology.

Depends on interface and integration. I had an kenwood deck ('06) model and the ipod interface on it was poor. For example, I couldn't browse my entire ipod. There was a folder limit and file limit within each folder. Why, I don't know. Why can't I browse it the way I browse my ipod? Now if you have an iphone I can see the advantage of usb over aux in.

Worth every penny. Flawless integration with the ability to control everything from the deck "and" keep the iPod charged.

I agree. They should just make it all standard, and charge one nice fat price.

The integration is nice, USB is great, HD Radio and Sirius is great. But again my fairly cheap Kenwood deck has all that, plus it will even voice tag tell you the artist, album, etc all through USB or MP3/WMA CD so that is even better for not taking your eyes off the road, something I doubt any option will give you from BMW. I am not saying to save your money and get a cheap aftermarket deck that will not look as good ever in the dash as the stock, my only complaint is that all this stuff is cheap these days and if you are going to have an almost $1000 stereo upgrade it should now in days already include a USB, HD Radio, Sirius/XM...just like my $200 receiver has! Instead it is over $2000 for all that!!! Again, I do not have a problem with any other option prices, but the stereo stuff is flat out a RIP OFF! I believe BMW just thinks their younger target audience for this car will all want these stereo options and will pay heavily for them. I bet within a year or two they are all standard.

It would be nice if the upgraded stereo included HD, USB and your choice of satellite radio (are they still two different companies?), but I dont see it on the 3er, so I bet they will all be seperate on the 1er...

As for DICE, I have that in my ZHP. I bet it would work great with a normal iPod, but it is a PITA with my iPhone. I didnt install it for 2 weeks, tried it for 3, asked if I could send it back and the response was "sorry, 30 day return policy." So now I have this $150 POS hookup in my ZHP. Sometimes it works great, sometimes I have to re-boot the phone multiple times...

I'll pay $400 just to NOT have the problems I've had with the DICE. Of course if I could do it all over again, I would have bought a normal iPod, DICE, and done a $50 insurance claim on my old phone. I might just end up buying a nano for the car and leaving the iPhone in my pocket...

On second thought, I take that back, this phone has been so handy when I've been in a pinch and needed on the net. Or when I'm in a non-navi car and need to find a place. I guess I just need to buy a nano or a classic to keep in the car full time...

Seriously??? I'd never heard that and find it suspect. Have you seen this work? I have an old ipod shuffle (stick version) and this would be cool.

No, I haven't seen it work personally, but have seen many, many posts on e90 post where USB thumb drives are used with the 6FL iPod/USB option in in e90-e93s.

I'm pretty sure that the 6FL option doesn't even know that you have an iPod inserted. It just sees it as a mass storage device with songs on it. It plays all of the iPod's formats natively, including MP3s. This would make sense, since it is supposed to allow playback from most MP3 players.

Edit: I found more info about this, that I thought warranted another thread.

Is that a limitation of the Ipod or the system?

They should state it doesn't work with your ipod (if really true, and not an anomaly with your ipod), but it's very cheap to rectify. Buy a 5th gen 30gb on ebay for cheap, get more capacity, video, and compatibility.

Btw, Lange rules.
