Hi All,

I recently purchased a 540xi. It was a CPO. From what I can tell it spent most of its time in Texas and looks like a lot of highway miles based on fuel economy it got. Clean car no accidents.

I’ve had the car for ~3 weeks and notice a clunk noise in the front. Took it to the dealer near me where I intend to get future service work done (not where I bought it) and they said both front struts need replacement. They are doing this under warranty.

I also put a bubble in a front run flat sidewall…so that was a fun expense to replace them all! Michelin PS4S so much better.

My question is this common failure this early? I’m coming from an Acura and had very little issues with that car over 200K.

It would seem to me the dealer who CPO’d the car should have caught this? Do you all suggest I bring this up to the original dealer? No real harm since it’s being fixed under warranty.

I certainly don’t recall anyone posting here with issues on the struts so no I don’t think that’s common at all
One to watch for which is quite common are coolant reservoir leaks .

At least it’s getting sorted under warranty

Yes worth doing a check on that, use a torch to see if there is any residue . Leaks seem to very small and over time take a while to get to the point where the low coolant messages is triggered

As you have a warranty you’d be covered if you have that issue
Just search these forums about it. Just a fyi about it

I knew that. I was just bustin' your chops a little. I just find it interesting the difference between some of our definitions; boot vs. trunk, hood vs. bonnet, etc. I read somewhere that the reason Webster changed the spelling of some words, like replacing the "y" with an "i," was to tick off the King. Typical American attitude!

Did he say struts or tension struts. The tension strut (big control arm) bushing is crap and fails easily. Both of mine failed before 40k miles. If the previous owner treated speed bumps as launching ramps, etc., the tension strut bushings might be dead. They are fluid filled so look for black staining around them.
