Why is the 135i so heavy ? (compared to it's siblings)
The 120d 3door weighs 1440kg, the 120d coupé 1450kg. (so the extra bodywork / equipment adds up to a reasonable sounding 10kg)
But - the 130i 3door weighs 1450kg, the 135i coupé 1560kg. Yes, the N54 twin turbo engine weighs 34kg more than the N52 3.0, and the transmission is probably beefed up to cope with the torque, but where has the other 50-60kg come from ? By comparsion, the 330i coupé is 1545kg and the 335i coupé is 1600kg - so 55kg, which is about what I'd expect, not 110kg more. Maybe they are making it look fatter than it is, so the ///M1 blows it away in terms of power / wt ? Any other theories ?! *All weights as per BMW web site, UK, including 68kg driver, 7kg luggage, 90% fuel filling. |

It's probably not just the transmission, but the entire driveline. The jump from 260HP to 300HP is not much, but the important spec here is the jump from 220ft-lbs to 300ft-lbs. Virtually everything that sees this torque (all the shafts in the driveline, for example) would have had to be upgraded.
The fact that the 135i comes with the M pack standard would add some weight as well. Generally speaking, OE 18 inch cast alloy wheels tend to be quite heavy, and so are the big brakes. |

I think this car will be great despite all the whining about weight. There is more to a great car than weight. That extra weight could mean the difference between life and death, not an extra 1/10th of a second off the 1/4 mile.

Amen to that Vornado. I agree weight is a killer for speed, but when it comes to driving around 4-5000 lb SUV's every little bit of weight could make the difference of walking away or being carted away from an accident.

Dragtimes.com lists some lightly modded c6 z06 times at around 11.5 with the stock ones still well under 12. Meanwhile the best 335i time listed is 12.5 (w/ PROcede). The z06 also has 325 rubber in the back. The 135i will need alot more than 245 rears and will need to ditch the twin turbos for a large single or even a sequential setup.

Only if that weight is the result of strengthening the crash structure and other safety improvement. Just being heavy is not safer in a collision in and of itself (actually it's worse)...

I suspect, that based on a comment made by the program manager for the 1er Coupe, that weight may have been added aft in order to preserve the desired 50/50 balance. There was a 'Car' online article that had a quote, don't have the link at the moment unfortunately. Hopefully, if they did add weight to the rear, they added it low and inside the rear axle line.

And I don't believe the 1er will need a bigger single turbo to keep up with a z06. It will need Procede v2, TBE, and intercooler, can we say 420whp? It's still debateable at that point, but it would be very close. You guys will be amazed what's available for the n54 within a year........ |

My logic is that the 335i with radials and older proceed can go 12.5, it can probably see a 12.2-12.3 on the new V2 Proceed (They say it's that much better!), and that subtracting a few hundred pounds "could" get the car into the 11's.... "could" |
