Double Helical Ball Bearing Rear End

The press release mentioned a 'double-helical' ball bearing rear end for the 1er. Even though it sounds like something needed on a bionic dog - here's a bit of info on what a double helical gear setup is.

Some additional info.

And there's this gem (although I haven't vetted it yet for accuracy or completeness - like I'd know if it was ; -).

I mentioned this "helical ball bearing" in a previous thread, I think it was a typo on the BMW press release, a helical bearing doesn't make any sense. Helical gears are very common in a wide variety of applications and give excellent load sharing along with smooth transitions across teeth (read as less gear mesh noise under proper lubrication)

The double helical makes sense (because of the torque thrust resistance of the 'herringbone' pattern gear surfaces). I'm not sure where the ball bearing piece of fits.
