Hey guys im new here to the forums and just wanted to share some cool info I found out.

On the BMW world website if you go to the mini site and click one of the 6 different areas you get to one that speaks of dynamics and such.

It says that the cars has a power to weight ratio of 5.1kg/hp which = 11.2lbs/hp.

If you take the cars rated hp (300) and multiply it by either lbs or kg you get 3360lbs or 1530kgs.

This is not to shabby of a number to have assuming that this is a curb weight. It bests the curb weight of the 335i coupe, by 211 lbs!!

Anywho I just wanted to share this info in case anybody was interested.

Hi, weight has been mentioned in other threads...but it's a little more than that unfortunately.

Believe it's rated at 306hp (well in Europe it is), which means we have just over 1560kg (which was mentioned in a spec sheet).

1560kg does however = 3439 pounds, so 120 or so less than the 335i

Also I just found the thread...and something doesnt match up...there is no way that the car can be so heavy compared to the 5 doors hatch..it just doesnt make sense...there has to be a mix-up/mis-calc between the different measurment systems...

yesir...something is sketchy. The Devil is in the Details though. We'll see when a magazine gets their hands on one. There is speculation that BMWs unladen weight includes 75kg for the driver and 90% fuel.

I just read through the thread, and went to the various BMW sites and found that the weight you stated is unladen weight and not curb weight. (Includes some weight)

The E60 M5's US weight (curb weight is 4012 = 1824 )
The E60 M5's EU weight is (unladen weight 4081 = 1855

The difference between the two M5's is 69lbs.

The differnece between my weight guess (most likely the curb weight 3360)

& your weight guess (unladen? 3439) is 79lbs.

So I think that the official curb weight (the only weight that matters) will be 3360 give or take 10 lbs.

I have no problems with 3300 pounds and I'm coming from a 2800lb roadster. If Honda wanted to make a coupe out of my car, it'll weigh about 3200 pounds and it wouldnt be a twin-turbo.

S2000 is hands down the greatest car I have ever driven..a true drivers car...I even made a 4 page report on it once...

PS. The E46 M3 is is 3415 and handles like a dream and a half from factory so if the 1 weighs less, I think that some KWV3's and some H&R sways will make for a perfect track package. That and some stickier rubber, to do away with the awful factory run flats.

Thanks man, I agree. Revving to 8200 is might fun. The 99-03 went to 9,000 rpms as you know. If Honda made a replacement soon enough I would sooo be into that. You know whats ironic? On the official s2k site, I would say I've seen at least 30 guys switch over to the 335i's. Some kept their s2k also. Its all about how the cars communicate with you. I'm sure you understand better than anybody else on this site what shoes this 1 coupe has to fill for me. No worries, I'll burn away those run-flats quick to reduce the weight and have better tires. :headbang:

90% of a 53 litre tank = 47.7 litres

47.7 * 0.72 (specific gravity of petrol) = 34.3KG (so I was abt 6Kg out)

Lets call it a round 1450kg

1 450 kilogram = 3 196.702 801 681 lb, lbs

pretty sure that's correct!

Its beyond me why bmw wont just say it has a 3200 pound curb weight. They'll make it look 3400lbs from a quick glance at there specs... Ughh. Thanks Dan.

Sounds good to me. My heiffer GTI weighs about 3300 lbs and feels quick with 100 less hp

UK MkV GTI works out at 1320kg (2910 pounds), plus 19kg for DSG...suspect the US one is also a fair bit less than a 135i.

As I have mentioned in the other thread, the US curb weight INCLUDES A FULL TANK OF GAS. So to compare with other vehicles sold in the US, you need to subtract the driver and luggage, but not the gas. In fact, you have to add a few lbs for 10% gas.

My last guess was ~150lbs subtraction from EU1 to US curb.

So, if we call it 3300 lb curb weight we won't be far off. Of course we still won't know how the sample car was equipped vs. stripped. But it gets us in the ball park.

BTW, a quick conversation with my dealer today confirmed something we'd all been thinking and that's that BMW goes to more trouble and expense to remove weight from the larger, more up-market cars than the smaller, more entry-level cars. That's why a 5 is barely heavier than a 3, and a 3 is barely heavier than a 1. It is what it is.

US spec cars invariably weigh more than EU versions due to more standard equipment and safety regs. I will be shocked if the US 135i weighs less than 3300 lbs. I would not even be suprised if it approached 3400 lbs. IMO that sort of mass makes comparisons to the 2002 a bit of a joke. Christ the US E28 M5 only weighed 3300 lbs.

IMO the comparisons are mostly just marketing. It's been said on hear before by another, but the 1-series is just another great new car from BMW. This one's smaller than most and quite powerful. It's aimed at those of us who want a smaller, more nimble BMW with more feel and less wizardry. Like every other BMW, it has pros and cons.

Is it the spirtual successor to the 2002? In some ways, yes. In other ways, no. Makes no difference to me. I just want it to have that special quality that makes me want to invent reasons to get in the car and go for a spin... again.

Glad we got that all squared away. But all in all 3300 lbs better be a maxed out curb weight and I will be happy...

Just read through this thread...I went from a 2003 S2000 to my current M3. I loved my S2000, quite possibly my favorite car i've ever owned. I have considered more than once to buy another one. Problem is the space and practicality...I think the 135 will be a great balance of room to stretch and awesome driving dynamics.
