BMW announces pricing on the 2008 1 series
"Car buyers looking for a subcompact mixed with luxury have the opportunity to purchase a new BMW 1 Series in 2008. Luxury cars, such as the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C Class, have appealed to young urban car buyers looking to add luxury to their “bling” lifestyles. In addition to luxury car buyers, the sporty 1 Series could attract enthusiasts engaged in the compact-performance lifestyles, where the European VW GTI is among many of the compact coupes modified for performance.
BMW recently announced that it will start selling its subcompact 1 Series in the United States in early 2008 for a base price of $27,400, which is $7,000 less than the 3 Series base price, according to a recent Automotive News article. Although the European version, which goes on sale this spring, comes in a three- or five-door hatchback, the U.S. version will have a trunk. The 1 Series was first introduced in Europe in 2003. Comments from one BMW dealer suggest that the upcoming vehicle will appeal to young buyers and entice non-BMW car buyers to consider buying from the brand." http://www.sema.org/main/semaorghome.aspx?id=56709 Perfect. I could live with 27,000 dollars. i wonder what the Euro-delivery price will be. Now the big question is what 2 engines are coming to the U.S. Hmmmm... |

That's good news.:roundel:
The price is slotted where a lot of us had expected...I had guessed 28-35k in another thread...from base model to adding every option on the menu. I won't be surprised if the price goes far beyond that once we start seeing more engine choices. When you go down the list of what are standard features on the new 1-2 series...28k is relatively a fair price. BTW xenon headlights are now standard features on all BMW's and lcd tailights are being incorporated on every model I know of - 2 years ago xenons were a $500. option on the Z4 and 3-series. |

I doubt the base 1 will xenons over here. But i do have my engine predictions.
125i 215hp I-6 $27,400 130i 260hp I-6 $30,500 M-model- 300+ $37,000 I really dont think they would use the same engine's from the current 3 series. I mean it would bother me if i owned a 3. Granted you have more space and luxury but damn, they'd have my motor..lol. But it would be nice to have the 328i's 230hp. I mean if you read the numbers, its almost as fast as the last gen. 330i. |

SEMA got their information from the Automotive News report from last week. Unfortunately, they took the information oout of context. The AN report stated that the 1 Series starts at $27,400 in Europe. That's for a base 116i. That figure is irrelevant to the American market, since we all know how poorly the Euro-to-Dollar conversions are for German cars. And ours certainly won't be equipped with a 1.6-liter 4.
The bottom line- BMW still has not made any official announcement about the 1 Series for America, except that we will indeed get one. All statements thus far have been unofficial.

it seems like it won't be sold in the states for less than 30k. and that's a small two door coupe. might as well just buy a 3 series. |

While it may be unconfirmed, I'd be guessing $27-28K is about right for a base 1-series with a i6 in North America... Still about $5K below a 328i. They'll have to be more careful in Canada, though. We have the 323i (not sold in the US) that starts at $35,600(CAD). It'll be a little tighter to squeeze the 1-series below that price point. But with $27-28K(USD), that means it would be around $32K(CAD) if the Canadian $ stays strong... |

On a side note, I looked at BMW's pricing for 335i in both the US and Europe. It bases for $40,600 here, and using the current conversion for currency, the German base price works out to $40,110. Very close indeed. Conversely, if you take the base price of the 130i (current 5-door) and convert to dollars, it works out to $36,636. That's probably steeper than this market would bear, so BMW would have to cut their margin a bit to make it a realistic propostion. Of course, if they cut too much margin, either on their end or on the dealers' end, then no one will make any money selling them- a pretty poor business case. Until we hear an official statement from BMW, probably in the third quarter of this year, all we can do is speculate. But that's OK, it's fun.

I wonder if broadening the market would introduce certain efficiencies that would bring the price down? And I wonder what the 130i engine is worth? In Canada, going from the 323i to the 328i is a $5,000 jump in price, and the engine likely accounts for at least $3,500 of that. I think we'll get a smaller i6 as the base engine... |

I agree. 27,400 does seem very logical. But wasnt it confirmed that the U.S. will get the 335i motor in the 1 hatchback? Does that translate over to the 1 coupe? I mean if i were in charge i would only have 2 different versions. I would have a normal 1. preferably with the 328i motor, and an M with the 335i motor.

I'll pay it, but 27.000 is way too expensive for this kind of car. Damn BMW and their luxury pedigree in the USA. The old 2002 and even 318ti wasn't that expensive at all, why not recreate the magic.
