USB port in glove box question

I have 09 E92 335 and I was trying to import all the music in the USB to i-drive through a USB port in the glovebox (as told in the manual), but when I plug in the USB in there, i-drive won't read it, it only reads when it's plugged into the port in the center armrest. However I can't download anything from USB in that port neither.

Did anyone have download files from USB drives?

I'm interested to hear how this works as well, my 135 has this feature but I didn't get to try it out over in Munich.

Are you plugging in a USB Flash Drive or a hard disk? If it is a disk, the USB bus might not have enough power to run the drive.

Yes, I'm using my USB flash drive, but it doesn't read the damn thing
So you guys are able to import music from USB flash drive by using the USB port in the glove compartment? or from center armrest?

Again, to make everything clear, USB port in center armrest READs the USB drive and plays music but does not perform IMPORTING process.
And USB port in the glove compartment does not work at all, reads nor imports...

Hmm, I may be restating the obvious here, but when you are in the CD/AUX screen, have you tried hitting 'Options' and then selecting 'Import from USB' (or whatever the command is?)

I'm pretty sure you cannot play files from the glovebox USB port, only transfer them to the library, and then you can play them from there.

Right. So.

I threw a few MP3 tracks on a flash drive and did a little test.

When I inserted the flash drive into the glovebox USB port, there was a bit of blue LED flashing while the system accessed the drive.

While the light was flashing, the system would not acknowledge the flash drive.

Once the flashing stopped, I went to the CD/Multimedia screen, then hit 'Options' and selected 'Import from USB device.'

This called up another menu that gave a few options for downloading from and backing up to the USB flash drive.

The entire time I was doing this, the flash drive never showed up on the External Devices screen. My iPod was right there where it should be, but the Aux(Front) slot remained blank as always.

Also, for those interested, I have found that the USB port in the glovebox WILL charge an iPhone just fine. It will NOT, however, provide enough juice to spin a USB hard disk.

Please note that BMW recommends against plugging anything that is USB bus powered (other than flash drives) into the glovebox port. Use this information at your peril.

Hope this helps.

Wait, so if I am reading the OP correctly... We have hard drives in our cars to store music? I just have my iPod hooked up...

If your car has the CIC instead of the CCC, then you have an 80 GB HDD.

Sorry Rameal, the HDD only became available in the 2009 (Gen 4) version of I-Drive.

Thanks for your detailed reply and kudos for trying it out on your own.
I'll have to try one more time after work.

Downloading music

I've downloaded about 12 GB of music from flash memory via the glove box port and it works fine

a few pointers:

1. make sure you use an interconnect USB cable between the port and the memory stick to ensure your memory stick is properly connected.
2. It usually takes a minute or two for the system to find a new USB device. Until it does, the >Download Mussic from a USB device< is greyed out
3. You are limited to the number of USB files you can create on the harddrive. So its best to use memory sticks of 2GB or more if you want to utilize all the space
4. Windows Media Audio files sound better than MP3 format and the '09 BMW sound system is good enough to reveal the difference. On average WMA files need about 30-50mb per CD so 12.5 GB will give you about a 300 CD in-car capacity

Problem with importing music through USB port

I'm having problem importing music through the USB port. My car detects the USB port and begins to import music, but it always stops midway and all the music functions would not work except for the radio until after about 20 mins or so. I've tried 2 different USB drives and they are both 1 GB each. Does anyone know what might be the problem? Any help will be much appreciated.

Are you sure that the only files on the USB card are music files that are supported by the iDrive (wma, mp3, etc.)? People have had problems when their USB drives have had non-music files on them. For example, one user copied his iTunes directory from his Mac onto a USB drive and ended up with a number of Mac-specific files on it that the iDrive didn't like.

USB ports and inporting music

The easiest way to import music is through the DVD slot. You can use dual-layer DVDs so you can import over 8 gig at a time. Do it on a long drive because it will take a while.

The USB port in the arm rest is handy for charging a blackberry. You can play music through it but if you have a jump drive and want to import music you need to use the glovebox usb.

I'm thinking you may be able to use a hard drive powered from the 12 volt supply in the armrest and plug it into the armrest usb. I believe that could work but the limitation is the number of files. You may have to distribute them in folders.

I'll say no. if it won't run a usb hard drive I don't think it'll move enough juice to charge a laptop. or it will take a really really really long time
