Spark Plugs
I am due for an oil change on my 18 M550 and the my BMW app is telling me that I will need spark plugs changed in addition to air and microfilters. I am thinking of tackling most of it myself and was in the process of ordering the parts.
It seems like FCP is out of the OEM BOSCH (BOS 8167) replacement spark plugs and do not have an alternate listed. I have seen some folks use the NGK 97506 in their N63 and S63 motors. Any thoughts on the NGKs, would they be OK, I am not tuned and completely stock. |

I just replaced my plugs and coils on my 2018 M550i. I had a bit of a lumpy idle with no codes and no air leaks, etc. Gas was good so it wasn't that as it lasted through multiple tanks of gas. After the change the car runs smooth as silk. No idle issue.
I used NGK Laser Iridium SILZKBR8D8S, stock number 97506 and the Dinan coils D650-0002 which are just about as cheap as stock or aftermarket ones. The Dinan coils require a minor mod that is easily done w/an exacto knife, etc. You need a thin walled 12 point 14mm spark plug wrench. My Facom thin walled one was not thin enough so I had to use a buddy's CTA 2376 socket. Pro tip, spray the inside with silicone spray if the socket pulls off the extension. It'll help the spark plug slip off easier, but it will still hold it as you extract/insert the plug. Torque is 23Nm. I used this youtube video for a 750i as a how to: N63 spark plug replacement video

So I am not tuned nor plan on doing that in the near future, I am also not planning on replacing the ignition coils. My understanding is that Coils dont necessarily need changed with spark plugs.
The car runs just perfect and I was only thinking of changing the spark plugs as the APP started alerting me for upcoming service. FCP euro tells me that they dont have any replacement or alternate for the OEM plugs for the M550 and I am going to have to get it from BMW if i need the OEM BOSCH. I believe they are 325$. |

Get the NGK Iridium plugs I mentioned above. 1/2 the price of the $325 you quoted for Bosch and I like NGK Iridium plugs better. I have used them for decades in street, track, and race vehicles. So there is a plus for owning a 2018 model year!

I just changed plugs on my 2018 M550i. Went with NGK 1-Step colder since I’m running Stage 1, gapped at .021 out the box. I’m also replacing all coils to the Genuine BMW Delphi packs since they’re less expensive compared to OE, surprisingly. FCP has a promo code still running for all 8 it will bring you down to $490 I believe.

May I ask how many miles do you have on your cars to need new plugs and coils??? Never heard of needing to change plugs and coils on a timely basis; only on mileage basis, and at least 60K. Thx.

You're not wrong. I changed mine at 39k chasing a slightly rough idle with no codes or stored codes. New plugs and coils did fix the issue so the parts cannon approach worked in this one instance. Since I can do the work myself it's no big deal to buy a few parts.
