Check out this video ...Thunderhill this past weekend
I was not there...it was full because I asked too late to instruct...one of the guys there has a Nissan GT-R..here is one of his videos. To be honest..I think he should have been black flagged for his escapades after T13 on the back straight..he did not get a point buy..nor did he have room to pass that other guy. Period.

Hmmmmm, I've never heard of 3 car point-by right before a corner. If I was in one of those 3 cars, I'd be pretty pissed off at that guy. Maybe the event organizers should have look at that video and give the driver some very specific "feedback".....

not sure the lack of point by is an issue.. maybe it was an open passing group. but seems like he had to drop wheels on the left side of the track to get past the red car, which is not acceptable
btw how did he get that video + speedo overlay? is that a telemetry package that can be installed on any car? |

The owner of the GT-R was my student many moons ago....when he had a 2004/5 M5..then he got a Cayman S...then he got a Porsche Turbo ....then he got the GT-R. I think money is no object with him. He didnt do that kinda stuff when I was instructing him...this is the fastest car he has owned so far.

He should be severely reprimanded. He never lifted upon coming onto traffic to give the passees a chance to give him a point by, WHEN the passees consider it safe to do so!
That is the Basic rule of HPDE's. Having a much faster car than the rest should not be an excuse for this kind of reckless behaviour.

The issue was that Audi 4000...red one..and the other cars were going REALLY slow. The speed differential between them was tremendous...probably 70-115 or so. That made the decision making time...a second or two. I have run in the instructor group with the Audi club for years...I would come up on this one female instructor (that really should not have been running in the instructor group since she is SO slow) with a huge speed differential..and I just had to tuck behind her until she gave me the passing signal.

Mixing apples and oranges was a recipe for disaster. GT-R was soo much faster.

Ocha I totally agree that taking forever to give point by is no better and is usually reprimanded too, but it shouldn't be used as an excuse to do something even more dangerous.
Having said that, isn't he supposed to be in an advanced group? And if so, I would have thought the variance in such a group to be narrower (with the exception of S4to335 female instructor), or that folks in such a group to be experienced and quick enough to let this guy by!

In this case, the GT-R was so much faster than the other cars, they didn't even see him because he came onto the straight much later than they did. Cars that different in speed shouldn't be out during the same session, especially if there are a lot of novice drivers. the GTR should have yielded to the other cars to be safe, but the red car should have checked his mirrors before pulling out to pass. They are all lucky that nothing happened. |

I wonder, with that speed differential, if the driver of red audi had looked in the rear and seen nothing then moved left and Hello!
Still, it's insane how quickly the GTR got to 130+ on the front straight. |
