CES 2023: Only new X1s getting iDrive 9 in two months!

Update 01/07: This is a big disappointment
"This applies to new vehicles from the production line only, as iDrive 9 relies on a new infotainment Headunit. BMWs with iDrive 8 already in the field will cannot be upgraded to OS9. Of course however, they will keep being updated via Remote Software Upgrades."

https://www.bmwblog.com/2023/01/07/b...-get-idrive-9/

----

"The current iDrive 8 used in every new BMW is going to be short-lived, as it’s going to be replaced in two months, starting with the BMW X1. The BMW X1 will get an all-new iDrive 9, replacing the old iDrive 8, and it will bring with it an all new user interface, new functionality, and even an app store."

I wonder if that's only for new cars produced after the release date or if it will be an over the air update or an update at the stealers for current cars?

I really hope it’s an OTA update. Would be really unfair otherwise.

Interesting, I don't know if it would end up being OTA or something you would have to bring to the dealer to do. I imagine it's pretty sizeable.

That works too as long as we get the update.

I think we shall get it. It would be hard for BMW to maintain updates for different operation systems on same model model.

Isn't id8 on Linux? I doubt we'll see this OS upgrade OTA to android OS. Can't always have the latest and greatest...

iDrive8 is Android-based on the 2023 X1, according to that article.....

Quote: "Cars like the BMW 7 Series, 5 Series, and most other BMW models have Linux-based systems, while the new X1, X2, and future MINIs have Android-based systems."

However, I don't know if that means OTA update to iDrive9 is guaranteed for current 2023 X1 owners... or those who will take delivery in February.(like me)

Stand corrected. That said it's doubtful ID8.5 or 9 will be made available to MY23's

The article says all current idrive 8 will be replaced with idrive 9. Sounds like we'll get the update?

To me it sounds like the current X1's up until the X1's built from March 2023 onwards when the transition is supposed to occur are iDrive 8's running on Linux.

These can be updated to iDrive 8.5 which is the same as iDrive 9 supposedly.

The X1's built after that will be iDrive 9 on an Android based OS, they won't be able to update it OTA if that is the case but hopefully they would be able to overwrite the Linux OS with the Android one during maintenance to update the system to iDrive 9 as I would assume the hardware won't change and should be compatible with both OS's. It could get OTA updates from then onwards with the new Android OS.

I'd say it will most likely be getting the iDrive 9, the build queue for an X1 is quite long these days and if you ordered last week I would assume the build will start after March.

According to my bmw sale rep most probably it will be ready in March-April, worst May.

I hope they can update it later on if its not done during the production.

But I cant track it as in my country its not possible.

Oh nice, that is quick.

I ordered in late November and was told build start would be in Feb/March with delivery in May/June for me. I'm in Australia though and our wait times for new builds is quite long.

I hope so also, I'm sure BMW will pass on more info in the coming weeks and we'll know for sure what the outcome will be.

Android is also linux based OS, both works on Linux kernel. With these Android integration I hope they don't start ads in infotainment system. imagine if you have to watch 5 sec ads everytime to start the car

I am fairly confident that our X1s will get the iDrive 9 update. They are already on Android and the My BMW app supports remote updates for these cars.

I applied a huge iDrive 7 update to our F40 late last year and IIRC I applied a remote update to a previous F30 that took it from one major version of iDrive to the next major version.

Early days yet, but I am not overly impressed with iDrive 8 so any opportunity to change it for the better will be welcomed by me!
