break in

Hi all,

There was a side discussion on one of the threads about this and I thought it deserved its own thread :-)

While I personally always followed some guidelines to break in my new vehicles, I always thought it was a thing of the past just like waiting for car to heat up before start driving etc., but BMW has official recommendations:

Piston rings go through a period in which they seat in the piston and seal to the cylinder wall. I think that's the thinking behind varying RPM's and cylinder pressures vs. constant cruising at highway speed for extended periods.
