Looking for tips and advice on racing seats for E92

I'm looking into racing seats for my upcoming 2009 track days. I've started looking but really don't know what I should be looking for. Would I have to have rails fabricated to integrate the seat to the E92's seat rails. Would the airbag deployment system be an issue causing added injury - i.e. should airbags be disabled. Do four point harness attached to the seat or would they be attached to the chassis?

I'd appreciate any insight so I can start asking the right questions and looking in the right places.

Thanks,
JL

To my knowledge there isn't any off-the-shelf seat mounting hardware available for the e92 as of yet. So, you would need custom fabricated ones. Side airbags are in the seats, so you will set off the system. Not sure if BMW techs can program the system to not look for them. You may be stuck with the warning light coming on all the time. Lastly, if you're putting seats in the car, I hope your mention of 4-pt harnesses was a typo. You should be putting a 5 pt (or 6 pt) harness with anti-sub mount. Harnesses will require a harness bar to also be installed in the car (also currently none available off the shelf). Harnesses DO NOT mount to the seat. Honestly, you have quite a bit of $ ahead if you want to get a proper seat setup in an e92.

personally, if it is not a full track car and you don't go 'all in' with cage, seat, harness ($$$$$) I think you are worse off than keeping the OE stuff.

think in terms of crash protection, not lateral support (and by the way, try to just inflate the side bolsters tightly and use a CGLock for your seat belt)

The side bolsters are not very useful for the track I'm afraid. So no race seat recommendations. I'm a little surprised that seats shouldn't be added to prevent lateral movement. A roll cage is not in the current plans. The CG Lock will definately help.

I think I can spare the 60 bucks. LOL. I'll order us up

Although I'd love to convert the car to a full track vehicle, the E92XI platform is just not worth it at this point in time.

I havent given up on race seats yet.

You tighten the seat belt, apply the CG Lock and it holds you tight in place. Prevents a lot of sliding around in the seat. I often have to use my knees to hold me in place which A) bruises the blighters up and B) makes a second track day rough.

A very worth while and inexpensive solution.

I'm in the US, so probably not the best guy to go a group buy with....

I've also seen some people run a scroth 4pt harness that is DOT approved and engineering with an anti submarine feature (i dont know much about the tech behind this) i personally would not use these since the shoulder straps are incorrect without a harness bar/cage, but just wanted to mention it as something others have done, and let you judge whether you are comfortable with the setup

If you check the US order, you will see that it's $49.xx for 1 and $89.xx for 2,
I think. So, you US folks may be getting a break if you buy more than 1.
We Canadians always get screwed Everything is more expensive here, starting with Car price itself.

Thanks for the heads up on the 4 point harnesses. Noob question here, how about using the rear child seat anchors to secure the shoulder harness, if you don't have a roll cage?

Nick, about the BMWCCA rules do you need to get 2 identical seats, or is it the seat belts that need to be same for both driver and passenger?

Usually the passenger restraints need to be AS good if not BETTER than the driver restraints...so you cant have a 5pt harness and race seat on driver side..and OEM on the passenger side. Now, if you arent going on road race track..you can have whatever you want on the driver and passenger side.

So by restraint you mean the seats too are included, that is we can't have
race seat only for the driver, OEM seat for passenger and with OEM seatbelts on both sides? Thanks!

Not sure if BMWs have this feature (I keep forgetting to try), but my friend's Corvette does, and so do the Toyota's I've driven.

while you are sitting in your car, buckled in, pull your shoulder belt ALL the way out to the end of its travel (probably need to go hand-over-hand to do this). At the end of travel, give it a firm pull so that you hear it catch. Now *slowly* let the seatbelt back in, and (if this works on BMWs) you will hear a ratcheting noise as the belt is retracting. take it all the way back against your chest, and then a bit more so that it's tight against your body.

If the feature works, the belt is locked into position and very snug. it will not pull out and will hold you in place until you release the buckle, and allow it to retract all the way back.

I've done this on my friend's C6 corvette, and it helped a lot while we were on the track.

Really? Strage, I find the adjustable side bolsters very good at the track..
Did you try inflating them all the way even if it feels snug uncomfortable?
They do hold you in place on the track in my experience
