oil leaking after 1200 mi service

not what I expected as my first post to the forum - first, this forum was really helpful in getting this porsche fanboy his first bmw last month - thanks guys.... Alas, last week right after the 1200 mile service (indicator came at 900 or so, but the service rep told me there was no need to rush, and pencil my appt a few days out).

Anways, got the car back - couldn't wait for the weekend to finally go beyond 5500 RPM- and what do I see - oil in my garage! Not something I expect to happen in a brand new car.

I had to get my car towed into the dealer to avoid risking any more driving..don't know how much oil was lost in the driving and oil indicator did not seem to be co-operating either.

So they call back and say they pinched a seal in the filler cap - and apparently this is common; and warned me to be careful if I ever top off my oil (am I supposed to?). They had to pressure wash the subframe to get the oil out.

Anyone else had this happen to them or heard of this?

Never heard of that from the filler cap unless they didnt tighten it...I've had a problem on a toyota where twice I took it for an oil change and it was leaking and both times it was the seal on the drain plug.

got the car back.. all good now, noticed they had to "test drive" the car for 30 miles to make sure no oil was leaking - sketchy; oh and tow guy scraped the bottom of front bumper too..

I've seen this before in previous cars. I wouldn't be too concerned.

there are apparently a some defective oil caps out there, you may want to ask the dealer for a replacement

Just had my 15,000 mile service. A week later and my car starts bleeding oil from the bottom of the engine. The top cap is fine and no oil up top....all literally pouring out of the bottom!!!!! I took it back in and have heard anything yet.

AHHHH! So this is common on 08 M3s?

Nope. You have the unfortunate honor to be the first one with a leak that bad. I replied on your thread, by the way, asking for more details, and if you checked the oil filter cap as well.
If it was a drain plug (like I suspect), and you drove the car for any length of time without oil (takes less than a minute to drain the oil thru the rear sump, and a maybe a few minutes thru the front one, where a lot of engine oil circulates back to the main sump, where the main pump is). If you drove the car for any length of time with no oil, I'd demand a new engine, but you'll face an uphill battle with your dealer to make it happen. Dealer incompetence like this is why I decided to do my own maintenance, even when I have to pay for it. I made that decision after the tech I trusted killed himself while riding a motorcycle drunk (only one dealer in town); don't want a high-school kid working on my $70K car. Good luck man, and please keep us posted.

Classic BMW is treating me like a number and just saying your car is ready...not our fault. The oil drain plug at the bottom of engine completely fell out and poured most of the oil out, but because it didn't happen two hours after the oil change, but rather two weeks they aren't really taking responsibility for this. I informed them I don't drive this car everyday. It had less than 150 miles since the oil change had happened. Prior to this 15K service, the car never a single problem.

I have escalated.
