Hardwiring a GPS - disconnect battery?

Hi all, I am planning on hardwiring a GPS, and I would suspect that I should disconnect the battery before doing a fuse tap, right? Will anything happen to the car? My last car was a Subaru, and I had no issues unplugging the battery... but who knows how smart an E90 is.
