6 Cylinder, 8 or Turbo 4? - Muscle...

At my core I am a V8 muscle car guy, Camaros, Mustangs, Chargers, etc. The deep, throaty sound of a big V8 with a big cam...

BTW, this is what my last boat sounded like that had twin 454s in it.

Being honest and transparent it was difficult for me to buy my 335i because it was a 6 cylinder, and not a V8. I love this car now though and it's been fun tuning it. I am impressed what the 6s with a turbo can do!

I watched some videos on the V4 high horsepower turbo engines being built now, replacing the 6s. Could you buy a 4? I could not, regardless of high much HP/Torque it puts out, I just couldn't. Well, didn't I say that earlier about the 6s? ;-)

My brother recently purchased a brand new 4 cylinder Supra. I laugh at him.

I absolutely loved my Evo9. Even though my 335i is much faster than my Evo, the Evo was just so much more fun to drive. Most new cars nowadays aren't that fun to drive though.

some of the 4 cylinder engines like the EA888 are pretty impressive, they suck when it comes to sound, and their power band is generally narrower,

4 cylinder supra lol,

I've always wanted to build a turbo Honda some day, those four cylinders get fast with some boost

Reminds me of the Vtech, older EP3 Type R had a great engine 👌

I love old school small block Chevy motors and the newer LS platform. A set of twin turbos on a junk yard LS can get you 600+ HP really easy.

That being said....there is something to say about a smooth idling, quiet, fuel efficient N54 that can deliver close to 600hp and over 500ft/lbs of torque. Honestly, for a fun daily drivers.....I like my 355i vs. something with a V8 in it.

Agreed, my 335i is not my daily driver, nor would my "muscle" car be if I owned one.

I prefer 6 cyls (growing up idolizing late 80s and 90s cars) the turbos 6's have always sounded perfect.

I've had and also like the 90s/early 2000s turbo 4s when they had some distinct sound. The new turbo 4's just drone.

V8s have never done anything for me personally. They sound too bleh and grunty, similar to the harley annoyance. However some older euro flat plane V8s(and the new mustang gt350) I actually quite like.

Boxer 4's in the WRX STI's sounded awesome in the early cars. Nothing like that with the new 4 cylinders.

I really like the 392 hemi's 6.4's that the "newer" challengers have. My older sister has an SRT 8 - MT

I so want that car. If she sells it, ill be first in line.

Funny you bring it up. My weekend beater is a 90 miata that has a built engine and a 62mm turbo. Feels faster than my FBO e93 but thats probably because of the extra weight.

Replaced the 335i today with an 18 wrx. Definitely not as fast but its plenty quick and nice to be in a 4 door versus the vert.

Funny enough the boxers were never in my taste either.

My preference was the saab/volvo turbo 4's and some others like the miatas, evos, silvias, mr2 etc. For some reason they made the 4cyls also have a personality in that sound. Now, almost all just sound like white noise ex the N20 or even the fiesta ST etc. Its just droning then pops/bangs.

I also have a turbo miata has my toy car and you are right; The miata is absolutely faster than my 335 w bigger twins. In a straight line and absolutely in the twisties, but its also one of the worst daily drivers so both serve their purpose (and can go illegally quick at basically any point)

Must be a generation/age thing, nothing sounds better to me then a rumbling small/big block.
