Accessing second DISA for testing
I’m doing a lot of repairs/maintenance I’ve put off on my car and I’m checking if both of my DISA valves are intact and functional. Got to the first disa this evening and pulled it out of the manifold. Now I need to get to the disa on the inside of the manifold, is it possible to test it’s function without removing the intake manifold completely? I want to see if it’s okay, and if it is, I would not really want to remove the intake manifold. Or should I? The big disa was covered in oil and some amount of oil did pour out of the manifold. Is it okay or does it need cleaning?

You can activate it with INPA and kind of hear if it's opening and closing but you can't be sure it's good without inspecting it. E92William is the disa guru he'll tell you if the large one is bad the small one almost surely is, and it's probably got oil in it. You can pull it by removing the alternator and going behind the manifold from there, it's a lot less to remove than pulling the manifold.

Okay, so the small disa can be completely removed by removing the alternator? Or just pulled out enough to see if it works? I pulled out my big disa out of the manifold, just can’t test it yet because all of my VMs with INPA are not working anymore.

I think they are original, i.e. 12 years old. would really love to replace them under SULEV warranty but they have to be broken. I haven't run an actuation test, though, so might not be actuating. Wonder if SULEV warranty covers parts if you DIY.

You can test it with INPA and with the smaller one they usually fail due to oil in the PVC whereas the large one actually breaks/fails. If you hear the motor moving and sounding sharp; then chances are its good.
You can remove it with the manifold on the car: remove the alternator and throttle body. You also gotta undo the PCV hose connections at the back of the manifold and you can just squeek it thru that way |

This is what you're looking at behind the manifold, there's plenty of clearance to remove it, just have to move that CCV hose as neilvan said.

Anyways, got my inpa vm sorted out, basically needed to install vcp drivers. saw the big DISA actually moving and heard the small one making the same noises as a big disa. I’ll of course still pull the small one out, just not today. Point is I don’t know why I’m waiting to order the guibo after I test the disas. If they are broken then dealer will take care of them, if not they’ll have to do for now. I have to take care of the clunk I was getting sometimes when lifting off the throttle and flush the heater core. I was too quick to assemble everything back together after I replaced the expansion tank and a radiator vent hose last Saturday. I think I need to do the water pump and thermostat as well as other cooling hoses I haven’t done yet. I literally had tstat, wp and the hoses “collecting dust” for 1.5 years.
