What's going on with used E9X prices?

Before I bought my 330 I was browsing the for sale section here almost daily. I was also watching craigslist and a few other online markets. Prices weren't bad, but then in early 2020 they started creeping up. I just checked the classified section on this site today and was stunned at the asking prices. The entire first page is nearly full of cars with $12K or higher asking prices. They're not all showroom quality either.

I remember about a year or two ago seeing a 325i 6MT for $2400 and it took the seller (an active forum member) several months to finally sell it. I've seen several 335s listed and selling for $5000-6000 too, but that doesn't seem to be the case any more.

They are the last of the BMW classic sport sedan. And you can get tons of miles out of them.

People may not be fans of the newer models and the market is pushing prices up.

You nailed it "its full of asking..." They are not selling, its owners trying to get some of there 40k back.

Anything on the for sale section is way over priced.

What gets me is the modded cars asking for the buyer to pay seemingly 100% for the mods on the car. I'm no grandpa yet, but I'm no spring chicken either. My entire life I've taken all of my mods off and sold them seperate from the car. Mods typically don't add value but actually detract from the value, or so I was always taught. Asking price and selling price are obviously 2 separate things though. The seller of my car definitely didn't get what they were asking 5 months ago. I think it has a lot to do with the above stated......the new stuff is ugly as sin to some while I get the sense that quite a few regard it as one of the last generations to retain a bit of the classic BMW lines and proportions. Some of it is bound to be the N54/55 and the realization of it's potential.....by the masses. I'm rooting for them all though! Makes me ponder on buying another one and stashing it for when mine is eventually worn down, I love mine that much. But give me another 5 months and I might change my tune! Lol

This all depends. A muffler delete, burble tune or ebay exhaust generally detracts from the price. However say a Dinan or M performance exhaust or some factory M3/M-sport parts; That will add value to "some select" buyers. Its unlikely you will get 100% of the cost though.

But for the general question; This year the used market seems to be going up all around. Enthusiast spec cars seem to be the highest risers and im sure its due to the lack of new cars that meet that area.

Agreed. A car that has been modded with the same outfit, ie Dinan, Lingenfilter, Gemballa or the like does better then a mixed bag of mods. And can definitely add value. I haven't seen one of those pop up on the for sale section yet though.

Yeah modded cars have lower value than stock. Your buying someone elses problem, which could get very difficult to repair due to custom setups.

If i was ever to sale i wont mention mods, unless asked.

I`m seeing about a 15% (about a grand) increase in asking price in the UK - No idea what they finally sell for like

Market. Supply and demand. Car manufacturers slowed down and also a lot of people lost income so can’t qualify loans for the lower amount of new vehicles being offered. Also, due to uncertainty with Covid people don’t like extra burden of a car payment. So the demand for used cars went up and so did the the prices. Not only bmw, all used cars.

If you don't ask for a higher price there is no way you'll get the higher price. You can always be haggled down but you can never haggle up. I say let them try for the higher selling prices. It only means my car might be worth a little more down the road.

I personally think our cars are going to be very desirable one day, especially the NA ones since it's the last generation that's a thing.

There's something still mechanical about these cars that the new ones just don't have. I do think the new cars are very good, but they're too computer-ey, too precise, too mechanically isolated. Even our 235i which is pretty damn quick just feels precise and not raw, although it's still a lot of fun to drive. Going PS2 once I get it.

It's what the mass market wants but enthusiasts tend to crave something a bit different.

Could it be covid and that new cars are so expensive? Again think about this...I saw a new Chevy Tahoe so decided on my day off to look at the GMC and Caddy versions. $83k and $100k respectively. And when I looked at the undercarriage really cheap stamped steel control arms....

Those have always been super overpriced. No one actually pays anywhere close to MSRP (or at least they didn't before Covid).

Generally speaking there isn't anything I'd argue about with regard to this statement
But, on the contrary, things are not slowing down for the manufacturers. I work for a tier1 supplier, and things haven't slowed. I'm not exactly sure who is buying new cars in these numbers, but they're building them. We supply every manufacturer except BMW/Volkswagen group. There was an initial hit which lasted from March until Late May/early June. It's been business as usual.

Seems to me that the e9x are the last "analog and modern" bmw model. The f series and new g series have many electronics and features, but it takes away from the actual driving experience.

A lot of people are looking for an analog feeling car when driving, but also one that has some modern features. The e9x fits that bill. To be honest I really dislike the F series cars and the g series cars. Not that they aren't great cars-I just prefer the hydraulic steering over the electronic steering.

And if you have an e9x with desirable specs and/or low miles then you can demand more of a premium for it when selling..within reason

Hopefully it isn't semi conductors...

Pretty much all manufacturers are affected, but Audi got the press.

No, that's not us. But that's good to know. It was only a matter of time before someone, somewhere in the chain started to constrict them.

I work for NTN Driveshaft.

It's all used cars and it doesn't make sense to me. I've been looking at the 340i and they've gone up since covid and the streets are dead ppl are working from home.

The only thing I can figure is ppl are flush with money because they have nothing to spend it on and are buying sporty cars

2006's are pretty much at rock bottom... it's the 2011's that are mostly absurdly priced. Also low KMs means it's made of gold regardless of condition obviously.

Edit: Yeah 2 series F22 being the goto BMW lately I guess.. there's a grand total of 4 manual I6s in Canada for sale on the 'trader.
