440i purchase pending

Evening all

So my current car is a 330D M Sport 2014, its been a mint car but time to move on and need a bigger open boot to put my mountain bike in

The 330D has though loading and works but the fix parcel shelf is a nightmare really

I was going to get a golf GTi performance MK7.5 with a nice hatchback but the boot is massive and its....well a golf and 4 pot

Always loved the straight 6 and 340i, then the 140i and then the 440i

Then saw that the 440i gran coupe is not only a 4 door but the boot is MASSIVE and like a hatchback

Why haven't I seen this magic before. Anyway I think after 1 year of planing my next car I have found it 440i gran coupe

Looking at maybe a 2018 or 2019 what's the road tax cost a year please ? Also if it doesn't have Apple play can I code it in at a later date. I know the idrive
is newer than my 2014 model, both cars have pro nav but is the 440i able to get apple play ?

The BMW garage also said the newer car has much better sat nav as standard and based on google maps....really ?

Thanks for reading and any help or advice

A 440i before June 2018 is MPPSK'able too!
Worth it's weight in gold, and these cars will always be premium to a non-MPPSK later on I feel. Handy if you're looking at the long term.

I'd rather choose MPPSK over a newer iDrive but your requirements may be different.

RFL is £475 a year for the 2nd-6th renewal - dealer/first owner would have done 1st payment.

I've seen and heard the MPPSK on YouTube videos. Its that much better ? Will I not like the B58 engine coming from a 330D surely its better even if standard

Also if I get a pre June 2018 can you even buy or fit a MPPSK now ?

Yes, loads of dealerships are still offering the MPPSK for 1500-1800 fitted, I assume once their gone, their gone though. It's a dealer fit item (includes software) so you cannot DIY.
I was in denial thinking the MPE backbox was enough but took the plunge and the difference in overall car 'feeling' is worth it alone. Normal driving is not much different but press Sport and it all changes.!

I'm not sure I see the benefit in a post 2018 40i, unless you want/need newer for a particular reason. The advantages are lower road tax (older 40i cars are less to tax I think) and the loss of ability to MPPSK if you decide.

A pre mid 2018 40i is a better ownership prospect than post mid 2018, in my opinion when I was looking for a long term keeper car.

Mine is a 2017 still higher road tax think it has to be pre April 2017 or something. Small cost in the scheme of owning a car really.

My F31 340i 2016 is around the 200 mark for road tax. I cant remember exactly.
Yes, agreed the road tax is a small price on the car ownership cost spreadsheet but it all helps.
The 6WB vitual dash can be added afterwards from reputable coders if it's on your wish list, many have done it without any problems.
It's on my future list of things to add as it makes a big difference in my opinion.

I'd try to get a test drive or find someone local to let you hear the MPPSK in action, the youtube vidoes don't do it justice. Although there was a guy on here that merged 2 recordings to make a very close sound clip. I'll try and find a link.

I had a 2017 facelift 440i registered just before the road tax hike. The MPPSK sounds great, heard a few and been in one. But, I’m pretty sure you won’t be disappointed with the standard sound either, I wasn’t.

Personally I don’t think the ability to add MPPSK will add any value against a newer car that can’t have the exhaust mod. They might be popular on here, but in the secondhand car world I doubt very much that it makes any difference to prices.

I think it boils down to if you want MPPSK go for early 2018 or before, if you don’t, buy as new as you can afford.

The road tax of £475 is for any car with a list price of over £40k registered after 4th April 2017. That could apply to a lot of cars you might consider, not just a 440i.

I appreciate that it amounts to the same thing, but the road tax is about £140, the rest is because you bought a car with a list price over 40k.

Assuming you keep the car beyond 6 years old, and the government don’t change the system again, the later car will be cheaper to tax than the older one.

I suspect the PPF equipped cars will also benefit in the future.

I would have thought an F31 would be more practical loading for a bike?

For the F36 i would go LCI - to get the new rear lights, idrive, dig dash etc. But you'd have to be very lucky to be able to find an LCI first registered before 4th April 2017!

Also early facelifts couldnt have the digital dash and HUD - when i spec'd mine it wasnt an option - but was able to added it to the build mid way.

imo HUD is more useful than the digital dash though.

But when considering its for a mountain bike its actually perfect for that.

Especially with the under-boot box for helmet/kit.

I never knew the 6 year plan for road tax rule, I thought £475 was for the life of the car..
Then yes, longer term providing the amounts dont change, the post April 2017 car will be cheaper.

I still hold the opinion that MPPSK 40i's will be sought after more, if not now, maybe in 5-10years and beyond. Just like any other car that had a special factory upgrade that cannot be retrofit again. The MPPSK might be the last of the BMW tune and exhaust systems due to changing regulations etc etc that really give what it describes..

I guess it depends on whats important to you. For me that tax savings for a pre April 2017 440i was worth it as much newer cars were out of my price range really. Quite hard to fine a decent 440i with the spec you want, worth waiting though.

I was originally looking at a S3 saloon, broadly similar to the Golf you're looking at. Posted on this forum looking for some advice and got some really useful replies that helped me decide what I wanted. Thread HERE.

I really don’t get the tax savings pick a car with the right spec for you, depreciation per month is more than the tax uplift per year.

If you can get the same car for less tax it seems like a no brainier if you’re going for a 2017 car, if you can find one. However, if you have the money for newer, I agree with you, go newer and don’t worry about the tax. It’s just over £25 a month extra with the higher tax.

I had one of the very few LCI cars that was taxed before the new 2017 tax rules. It was pretty much the first LCI in the country, other members had factory orders of pre LCI cars arrive at dealers after mine did.

I pushed and got mine registered 6 days before the tax change. Searching for another car that arrived in that really small time slot is probably a bit needle in haystack.

I would definitely go LCI thinking about it, and not for spec levels, they sorted the poor handling out when they did the LCI.

Totally agree LCI all the way.

Prob worded it a bit wrong I wouldn’t dismiss car because of higher tax rates factoring in all ownership costs.

I paid £465 in tax for my 2018 OPF 440i.
Definitely try to find one with the HUD... I would never go for a modern car without the HUD now that I have one with it.
