M Performance Brake Upgrade

Hi everyone, I have 2015 435i with the standard brakes. I'm going to need new brakes all the way around in 4700 miles and I figured I'd just do the upgrade in one shot. Now, if I get it done at the dealer, do they reprogram the car for the bigger rotors and bigger calipers in the rear?

I guess to the dealer for this mod. I have about 4800 miles of pad left, let's hope BMW doesn't just discontinue them.

never go to the dealer for any mod unless it's under warranty or something that requires a "special" BMW tool that most indy shops don't have.
As for brakes, no coding is needed, the car is precoded for the MP BBK already. Just got it done myself, didn't code anything, just plug and play. no problems.

If you have the 340/330 brakes currently, you're going to need to code after the MPBBK.
Many members here reported feeling mushy pedals without coding.
If you dig, there are threads on the coding instructions for the 370/345 brakes.

Do NOT take your car to a dealer for an M Performance Brake Upgrade. You will be totally ripped off for parts and labor while the entire thing shouldn't cost more than ~$2,400+tax. I can give you the details if you still want to go that route.

FYI- The MP Brake Kit is a generic product meant to fit any F3x.

The calipers in the MPBK are the exact same calipers as the M Sport blue brakes that are on some 435i's. They are all Brembo front 370mm and Brembo rear 345mm. The only difference is that in the MPBK, instead of painting the calipers blue, they paint them red, yellow or orange. The kit also comes with four sets of brake pads that are average at best. And two front dimpled/slotted rotors that are noisy. They are for show, not actual street performance.

The kit's generic instructions say to code the car because some F3x cars with lower level brakes will need to be coded. A 335i/435i/340i/440i with either grey 340/330 or blue 370/345 brakes does not need to be coded because the front/rear brake ratio setting is the same.

Since the MPBK is generic it also does not come with rear brake rotors. The kit requires a 345mm x 24mm rear rotor. But some mostly earlier and lower end F3x came with rear 160mm handbrakes built into smaller hat brake rotors. Other F3x came with larger 185mm hand brakes that required larger hat rear rotors to fit inside. Your 435i has a 185mm handbrake so for the MPBK on your car, you would need rear rotors that are 345mm x 24mm with a 185mm handbrake fitment inside larger rotor hats. (This is the most common size)

When you say that you have standard brakes, you mean grey brakes and not blue brakes, correct? How many miles are on your car? How long have you had it? Do you know if brake pads or rotors have ever been changed?

If you came up with 4,700 miles before needing new brakes all around from the dash computer, it is not accurate AT ALL! It is some computer guess, that is not based on any data whatsoever. You could have 25,000 miles remaining on your brakes. The only way to tell for sure is to measure the current thickness of your pads and rotors.

If you are in Philly and need an independent BMW mechanic, I know one right over the bridge in SJ who is excellent.

Yeah dude, honestly I don't work on my own cars and don't have time. I've had the car 4 months and the car only has 34,800 miles on it.

With 34k miles it's unlikely that you need rotors. Put on Hawk 5.0 pads if you want a big improvement.

If you insist on going to a dealer use Thompson BMW because they have a mod shop so they are experienced and shouldn't screw it up.

Best price on MPBK is $1,795 at GetBMWParts website. Buy matching Zimmermann rotors for your rears making sure to get the correct rear rotors for the 160mm or 185mm handbrake that's on your car. (335i/435i have more common 185mm)

A reasonable Indy labor price to install an MP Brake Kit is $400-$450.

Yeah I live right by Thompson. I'd like to get them to price match the brake kit.

Exactly this

When I went from the Gray 4 piston Brembo/340 fronts & single Bosch/330 rears, to the Blue 370/345 brakes on my F32, I was told that coding/programming was not necessary

I feel no detriment to not coding MPerf brakes in this situation

The two BMW techs who did the 340/330 to 370/345 upgrade for me said the same thing. No coding necessary because of the base brakes that the car started from. They said that both are coded as S2NHA on the car which is the M Sport Brake designation.

Don't do the BBK they make a lot of annoying ticking noise, and use the same rotors side to side so they lean forward on one side of the car and rearward on the other. Keep your blue calipers, upgrade the rotors to StopTech slotted, pads Hawk HPS ceramic, stainless lines, Motul RBF600. I had Thompson do my F31 BBK upgrade because I had base grey 328 brakes to start with. They recommended this path for replacement when BBK stuff wears out. Will save you some money and you'll end up with a better setup.

You made good points but IMO I'd go with Hawk 5.0 pads over ceramic. Better bite and instant warm up. Slotted/dimpled rotors in MPBK are all for show and they are noisy like you said. I avoid anything slotted. StopTech crossdrilled have great bite and are amazing in the rain. Porsche, McLaren, Mercedes etc all use crossdrilled on their street performance cars for that reason. Be Safe!

Be Safe!
I think bottom line for OP is with decent calipers (sounds like he has) upgrade rotors, pads, stainless lines and fluid - good to go.

Lots of good pad and rotor options, think we agree that BBK isn't the best choice either for performance or value. Can spend less and get a better result.

FYI- The MP Brake Kit is a generic product meant to fit any F3x.

The calipers in the MPBK are the exact same calipers as the M Sport blue brakes that are on some 435i's. They are all Brembo front 370mm and Brembo rear 345mm.
Would you happen to have the blue (370mm) caliper part numbers ? Thanks

You could find part numbers for 370mm front calipers in realoem website. But it's not cost effective to even think about buying them new. They are $700+ each.

You can buy a used set of all four 370/345 calipers for $700-$1,100 depending on cosmetic condition. Just watch the classified postings

You made good points but IMO I'd go with Hawk 5.0 pads over ceramic. Better bite and instant warm up. Slotted/dimpled rotors in MPBK are all for show and they are noisy like you said. Have you used or heard of how the stop tech sport pads are? Is it worth upgrade the hawk 5.0's?

Get Hawk 5.0 pads. Best bite, instant warm up and light dust that washes right off. Can't get better than Hawk 5.0 in a street performance pad.

Don't fall for "packages". It's a scam for companies with one strong component to try to increase their sales by getting you to also purchase another component from them that is weaker compared to its competitors.

Buy the best component in each category.

FYI- once you get part numbers on Hawk 5.0 pads, take the time to shop a little. Big conglomerates like ECS play games by jacking up prices. I have spotted them doing that.

ECS in the past couple of years has quietly been buying up other retailers in this space like Turner, Pelican Parts and more. So you may think that you are searching around for a good price. But if you are actually looking at 2, or 3, or 4 retailers all owned by ECS, you may be seeing the same high price set by the parent company, ECS!

I just saw ECS selling a set of four Hawk 5.0 pads for $312 that I bought not long ago for about $225. For a minute I thought maybe Hawk raised prices or something. Not so! It was ECS creeping up the price to increase their profits. Took me about 3 minutes to find a reputable vendor (not some eBay basement operation) selling the same thing for $210 shipped!
