In car and exterior camera choices?

I'm looking to install a in car camera. Anything out there that anyone can recommend that runs uneffected by shocks and has easy mounting system?

The only thing I was abe to find was the Digital Hero 3, but I was looking for other options too.
What have you been using?

$180 for that?!

Dude, if it was up to me I'd just use a digital camera that can record and just buy a big enough memory card for it. That's my solution anyway. As far as mounting it I'd just rig something but I wouldn't pay $180 for a camera like the one you link, it vibrates anyway, at least the one on the front bumper did.

Spirited answer, but not quite what I was looking for. Have any rational suggestions? I'd just hook up my Sony digicam in the car, but I have not been able to find a suitable mounting system to mount on the window or other location?

Anyone?

Sorry if my answer wasn't a good one, if that's what you meant. As far as mounting I remember seeing a thread on here where a guy said he made his own mount, basically he ran a pipe across his two front seats (headrest to headrest), created a method to secure it and hold his camera as well, and that was it.

Hopefully someone has an idea of where to buy a mounting system or maybe a DIY on making one.

Corner 73 selling these Hero 3 for 199.99 Can$. The brackets + camera looks like a good option too, cheaper cos you'll be buying only the brackets.

The best that I've seen, is the chase cam. Seriously expensive, but the best quality of everything I've seen. One caveat that isn't noticeable right up front... It doesn't have a screen so you don't know if you have the camera set up right to "preview" what the camera sees.

Audio quality is the biggest question mark. "I've heard" that any camera without an external mic will have suboptimal audio but some are better than others. For example, I tried using my Aptex Go HD 720p digital recorder and the video was fine but the wind noise was awful and drowned out all else.

I have yet to try another setup, since I'm reluctant to shell out ~$200 without someone else verifying the audio

And off topic.. speaking of cameras, I left my canon SD750 on the roof of my car while unloading stuff in my parking garage and someone stole it pretty pissed about that.

The suction cup works pretty well on the outside of the car. Saw one mounted on a sunroof with no issues.

I wonder if BMWCCA (or Similar) HPDE events will allow something on the roof. I am thinking safety hazard for others. Anybody can comment on this?

This guy that rocks the ChaseCam has no problems. You can kinda see it on the roof. He said that video and telemetry start recording when he gets to > 25mph. And, once he gets below that, it records for 30 seconds more before shutting off.

Thanks! I ask because usually the car needs to be stripped out of anything loose, as the thinking is that anything loose can become a projectile in case of accidents. We need to remove car mats/rugs, empty glove box, empty trunk mat etc. etc., even the bobbleheads LOL. So I guess, this type of support has been judged safe!

As long as they are affixed to the car with a mounting bracket, they are fine. The job is now trying to track down a decent mount that works. Let me know if you are interested in what I find out on the chasecam line and I'll pass you the material. I'm thinking of getting the headrest system that holds two cameras. Looks sturdy, easy setup and inexpensive.

Ok Joel, lemme know what you find. $200 I find inexpensive, $1,000 a little too much...Thanks budy. Now, go check if October 4th is good for you for the Indian supper!

Did I tell you I like your sig "A light sprinkle of mods" LOL.

Do you already have a camera and just looking for mounts? This is pretty good for a small camera (like the Aiptek one Nick mentioned):
http://www.chasecam.com/mounts/suction/SM30

Make sure you use a tape or solid state memory camera, and not harddrive based camera.

For the CruiseCam mounts for existing cameras, there are two choices, small (one headrest) and large (two headrest.) I'm thinking the small mount would work fine for my needs. Any experience with either one? Any reason to go with the larger one for the extra $40? I know it says it is a more stable mount, but how stable is the smaller, single headrest mount?

The small one is more then capable. I've used it on local canyons as well as on the track and the video is very stable. Ill try and upload a recent video on the track so you can get a idea for yourself how it holds up. Im sure the larger one is just as stable, if not more stable, but i honestly dont think its worth the extra $40

For the CHASECAM SM30 suction mount, are there any issues with just regular SD card digital cameras?

Also, this should be good for the rear bumper and rear inner windshield?

It states it can hold up to 65lb which is much much more than just a regular digital camera!
