Dealership Brake Replacement Inquiry

So I went to go get my used 2016 435i x GC serviced yesterday at my local dealership in MA, I told them of some issues with the brakes that I was concerned with.

At the time, they told me a initial estimate / quote of $900 per axle pre-tax.
This morning they called me and told me that the my front brakes would need to be replaced. I didn't catch and understand everything but the rep said something like the brakes begin at 10.0, and now mine are at 3.9, he said that anything under 4.0 needs a replacement.

I'm not sure if this brake replacement encompasses the pads, rotors, calipers individually, or it is the whole thing.

He then told me that since this is a 'special' model (F36) he said that per axle to do the front brakes alone is $1100, and that the price for the back may be different. When I asked if there was any issues with the back, he said that they hadn't checked yet.

Now to be honest, as a new car and BMW owner may be I'm inept and gullible, but I really don't know what to do. I don't have $1100 lying around after paying for the the basic inspection ($200, interior air cabin filter ($150), and oil filter ($150), which comes around to $500 pre-tax. What should I do?

Thanks for your time.
K

EDIT: For the time being I told him to hold off on it and that I would need to think about it.

Your dealer is a thief. Go to an indy, you shouldn't pay more than half what you were quoted for brakes. The interior air filter shouldn't cost more than $75 installed, an oil filter $40 installed.

Ok, unfortunately, I already paid for the air filter and oil filter. I just wish I knew a trustworthy / reputable indy shop.. sigh.

Thanks for the advice, I will definitely hold off on the brakes.

How many miles does your car have?

"F36 is a special model" comment is already sufficiently alarming.

You can find a reputable local shop at https://www.bimmershops.com

USA - New England forum at https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/fo...play.php?f=406 is a good place to ask a question about a reputable shop in your area.

You can change the brakes yourself. Super easy job.
