Dimpled Slotted Brake Rotor Noises

I purchased zimmermann dimple slotted rotors and akebono eur pads for my 340i, when i put them on they were grinding and making all types of noises especially when driving next to curbs or walls. I also read on this forum several other members who had this issue and I heard someone changed their brake pads to OEM pads and that solved the issue......and it has for me. My reasoning on why OEM pads dont make the fluttering noise is because they do not have a slot in the middle that create a air channel that pushes air into the slots and dimples. See photos for comparison:

I’m on OEM pads and still get that noise you’re talking about. Maybe it’s a YMMV thing?

its the dimples, i drilled through the dimples and the noise is significantly less, i get no noise on my driver side but a lil on the passenger, but a lot less that ppl can't here it.

I won't be going dimpled rotors next time around

mine definitely have no noise. I greased the backsides of the pads too, maybe that is what makes a difference? Maybe the materials also?

34116878882 is the part number I use they are the genuine mperformance brake pads.

FYI- Slotted rotors are known to be noisy. My local independent BMW shop owner tries to talk customers out of them because he says the rate of returns is so high due to noise complaints.

I've seen dimpled rotors where the dimples appear rusty. Someone told me that the dimples aren't rusted but that they pickup material that rusts. All I know is they looked like rotors full of rusty dots.

yup, they are definitley noisy and besides looking good I wouldn't invest in for a daily driver.. and seeing rust spots makes sense, even regular brake rotors that have rust after it rains will go away because of contact with the pad, but the dimples won't make contact so the rust will stay.

I have EBC redstuff pads and the dimpled/slotted rotors. I do have the noise when next to a wall. It's the same on both sides and it doesn't change at all. It's definitely just the air noise from the rotors. Next time I'll probably go with blank rotors.

I can also confirm that dimpled & slotted rotors paired with Hawk HPS 5.0 pads make noise. I've mostly gotten used to it, and I'm personally ok with the trade off.

Do those pads have slots?

From my recollection, yes, they do have the groove in the center.

Mine still are quiet with oem pads. I think the slot is what makes the noises. I can send you my old brake pad oem if you want to try

I appreciate the offer, but it sounds like you have the 370mm rotors. I'm still on stock 340mm.

The 340mm and 370mm caliper utilise the same pads.

Really? I had no idea. I'm open to doing some testing. Feel free to shoot me a DM to work out details.

Hmm I have zero noise with this exact setup

I’m kind of ocd with noise I probably would replace the square cut seals in the pistons if mine were grinding. My first instinct would be that the piston isn’t retracting enough to pull the pad off the rotor.

It's the dimpled rotors have that since 2015 with mperformance rotors, totally fine. other than that extra wind noise.

can someone give a good description or take a video of this noise and how bad it is?
for those who have had it for a long period of time, does it still bother you?
