Service engine soon light - now stereo needs to be replaced!?
I had the service engine soon light come on Saturday and was able to get the car to the dealership yesterday morning (Thursday). I've owned the car almost a year and it has about 13k miles. So, the service advisor tells me before they've had a chance to look at it that it probably just needs a software update. He called me late yesterday to tell me they were still running "tests" on it, which I thought was odd since these probably don't take all day to do. Today he calls and tells me that there were some anolmalies with the stereo (factory unit) and that they're going to have to replace it. WTF? I asked him how this happened - if they somehow burned it while running their "tests". He's not sure what happened. Only been with the co. a couple of weeks. And he's still unable to tell me exactly what triggered the SES light. Now they probably won't get the unit until next week - I've got a loaner. Any advice?

Relax, enjoy putting mileage on their car, and get a complete explanation when your repairs are done.

That's what I don't get - how they could have messed the radio up when the engine was the problem. Like ganeil said though - I'm just going to wait and have them explain it to me when I go get it. Hopefully nothing else was affected.
lkn - the stereo was working fine when I took it in. The car had stalled, then started misfiring, that's when the check engine light came on. I shut the car down and it ran fine when I turned it back on, but the light stayed on. The loaner is a 2007 328i |

The engine might not have been an issue...the radio malfunction might have created an electrical glitch that threw a false CEL. These cars are so inter-connected. Don't worry about it.

no offence but you are whining over nothing. Like mentioned earlier, enjoy the loaner, put miles on it, drive it off a cliff, who cares. less miles on your car better. while it's in the shop, tell the SA that because of the inconvenience, she should detail the car while it's in the shop. Hopefully if they give you a new radio, they give you one with the 6 shortcut keys.
