Cooling upgrades
'08 335xi E90 6MT, stage 1+. During normal driving, my oil temp is 220-240F. During spirited street driving, I sometimes get up to 250F. Did my first track day today, and my sustained oil temps were 280-290F, eventually creeping up to 300F. After 30-60 minutes at or near 300F, the car started cutting boost and I called it a day.
I need to get the temps under control before heading back to the track. Should I be looking at upgrading the radiator, or getting an oil cooler, or both? Do you have recommendations for what brands/models of each to get? Thanks! |

Does your car have a stock sport cooler? Most xdrives don't.
If not, why the hell did you do a track day without that first. Lol

I was saw 250 during winter time when riding in Alps (no spirited driving), once I power washed the stock oil cooler the temps were fine even during the summer time, hard to get them to towards 250 even when pushed hard (on the streets)... I have the hood vents that might be helping a bit... however I will report back in April once back from SPA circuit :-)

Maybe my oil cooler also needs a pressure wash. Did you wash yours from the fender or sprayed it from the front? |

From the fender... remove the wheel and plastic grill (3-4 screws), aim the stream parallel with the fins IOT not to damage/bend them... a lot of gunk will come from the front opening, you will see through the cooler afterwards easily...

The machined connectors are a work of art. It has plenty of cooling capacity. I'll need to do the power wash thing. My factory oil cooler is probably gunned to no end.

Thanks guys, I'm assembling an oil cooler kit and will order a CSF radiator soon. Any fitment details I should be aware of, or does it drop in just like OEM?

Be aware you will not be able to fit OEM location upgraded inlets with the added thickness of the CSF radiator. Not a big deal if staying stock or using relocated inlets, but just something to consider.

Thanks for the heads up. No current plans to upgrade inlets, but then a week ago I wasn't planning to upgrade my cooling.

Do you have a factory oil cooler? If not, you'll need a sport oil filter housing.

I have most of the parts from the oil cooler kit for sale. There are others stuff you can do to maintain lower temps. Fan from 335d/335is/135is,1M are 850w. 335is/135is/1M also have aux coolant radiator too. Additionally, some tunes offer different mapping for the coolant pump and the fan. I have track my 335i a lot. Never have had any issue with hot temps. So look into your driving style. If is park it and punch it, then there is another problem that need to be addressed as well...
