Exclamation DIY: E90 Andy's POOPER SCOOPER V1 ( RAM AIR )

So, 1st day of college.. i missed my 1st class cause my 2am sleeping habit hasnt changed. So on the forums i somehow passed on the "air ram" or "scooper" with 3hrs do burn i did all the homework i could on the idea and after class headed to homedepot

I bring you "THE POOPER SCOOPER V1" by yours truly.

SO.. to start off, you need some materials, i'll list what i used.

- Home Depot 22gauge Steel sheet. 18" x 24" $8bucks
- Heavy duty metal cutting sheers
- Vise grip like pliers
- Mechanix Gloves ( comes in handy so u dont cut yourself!)

- Go JO Orange hand cleaner
- Paper
- Pencil
- Measuring device (ruler or such)
- Aluminum Level
- Torx Bit driver
- Flat head screwdriver
- 4x 10mm bolts
- 4x nuts for bolts
- 2x Self tapping screws
- Washers for bolts
- Drill with metal drill bits
- 6 pack of beer or capriSun strawberry
- Socket wrench
- Hi-temp engine paint, Pink is the optimal color
- Poor mans Paint booth
- Sand paper

You WILL be using one of the Factory fasteners to hold up the Pooper scooper, however, for added stability i recommend making an additional bracket, like i did to hold it up @ hi-way speeds!

Step One:

Get your sheet of Metal and draw out the dimensions 8inch x 6inches. Cut it out. Then, on the 8inch side. Draw out a one inch width line vertically. Do the same for both sides. Now, starting from the top measure down two inches and make a mark. do the same, draw a line across the top 2inches down. See picture below.

Step Two:

Cut out the Light blue lines, as shown in the diagram. The edges are cut at roughly a 45degree angle. Sand down the sharp edges so u dont cut yourself This is where the gloves come in handy*** Okay, so with everything drawn out, cut and sanded; bend the two 1inch sides UP to form a 90degree angle. Now, take the 2inch section, bend it upwards to about 45 degrees or however u would like. i believe mines is around 45degrees or so. Ta da! you're halfway done. Honestly the hardest part of the whole project was cutting the steel, its hard as shit! but this helps for this 100+ wind speeds which everyone is used to heh.

Step Three:

Take off the stock intake duct. You do this by removing the 2 torx screws that are located on the intake duct. There are also 2 plastic pins that you will have to PULL out. Use your pliers and pull upwards until the plastic pins come off, then remove the bottom section of the fastener. Okay, with the Intake duct cover off do a mock up of how your POOPER SCOOPER is supposed to sit. Mines sit further outwards to the further edges of the opening. Btw. the 2inch section is the section that goes into the duct. and the 4inch section goes towards the grills.

Step Four:

Cut out TWO 1" x 3.5" pieces of steel. now.. Drill a hole in one end 0.5 inches away from the edge. This makes way for the screw. Okay next, Drill another hole at the other end. i'd say.. .5inches away from the other end also. Bend the piece of metal to form a 90degree bend as shown in the picture. Make two of these. Finger tighten everthing together as shown in picture.

Step Five:

REPEAT STEP 1-4 but drill the holes on the other side!!!

Step Six

Sand down, clean up your mess. Drink an icey cold beer because youre done with the "easy" part. Time for the mock up. Align everything and adjust brackets as needed so that the bolt holes line up to the factory air duct holes. Once everything is bent to the right place, tighten bolts. Now.. time for the fun part. PAINT! I chose to paint using Duplicolor ENGINE ENAMEL. It has ceramic so it helps with blocking the radiant heat of the STEEL scoopers. I used GLOSS BLACK because its not dull like matte black, but its classy, subtle yet noticable if you look. but stealthly at the same time.

Step Seven:

After everything is dry, personalize your Pooper scooper with whatever u want and make it look cool. I personally added afew drip paint marks to mines heh. its on the bottom so yeah.... anyway. Bolt up you scoops, re-install the air duct. take afew pics . Re-install the front grill and take for a test drive!!!!

This mod should increase power as well as GAS MILEAGE! WHY? because it allows for cooler/ fresh air to come into the engine without it sucking it. Makes your engine more efficient therfore yielding more power, and overall improving gas mileage. Hope this helps!!! I posted pics of my finished product which i am very very proud of. Sure beats paying 100+ bucks, even though they might look better. But oh well, i used ALLEN key bolts so mines is super sexy too!

Enjoy

Thumbs up

THANX ******* , It took me about 3hrs to fabricate and paint the self made scoops..., I dont know about you guys but for my 318i, is a great improvement, also running a 'GREEN' sport air filter . Made them out of a plastic sheet that is ~0.3cm thick, black matt paint..... pics soon
THANK YOU *******

PS: I'm also concerned about the rain..., not that it will effect the scoops(I will make another set),but what if water gets to the air filter?

You could drill afew holes in the Crease section where the BEND is right smack in the middle. i would say.. 4x 1/4 holes should suffice. But yeah, the way i mounted mines it kinda sits behind the air hole, right on top of the airconditioning condenser thing (if u know what i mean) It makes like a little over lapping lip so any water would hit that lip and fly off not going into the air intake

This may be an incredibly stupid concept... BUT... has anyone experimented with curving the ends of the scoops that face the kidney grills along the bottom? Sort of like a plane wing? Wouldn't this create a bit of lift for the airstream and help flow? I'm guessing it would be so negligible it wouldn't matter but... I don't know. Might look cool...? haha

I'll be attempting this mod this weekend. Maybe I'll give it a go so you can all laugh at my stupid idea.

i think its a great idea! however... the material i used "22 gauge steel" isnt very soft so it was hard as heck just to get it the way i wanted. but yeah, im sure there will be benafits of rolling in the edges in form as well as function

Hm my buddy knows how to pipe-bend and has a welder. I would guess if I can use a blow torch or something I can get it to bend since he has all the gear for it. I'm gonna give this a shot and see how it turns out. Ill post pictures if it works out. If I dont post pictures... assume that I lost both hands in the process lol

Nice effort... I'm sure this does the same thing as the other ones, but it just looks so "home made" (stating the obvious here) to put on my BMW. I commend your efforts though! Good job!!

could you make these out of fiberglass? would there be too much heat for the glass?
i think you could mold some fiberglass, paint it, sand, and make it look real good. maybe just put a rubber grommet around the glass where the bolts go.
any thought?

does this mainly help stock intakes? what if you have a dci? would it push enough air into the bay for the cones to grab?

So i'm thinking i could make up a few of these at work (1. laser cutting 2. cnc press brake 3. my CAD design)... anyone have an approx angle these are sitting at?

Guys, these really should NOT be $200 from anyone i bet with cad time and everything involved they have about $30-$40 in them. With resonable mark up they should be $80-100....NOT $200....
