Wireless charging overheating

My iPhone becomes extremely hot every time I use the wireless charging on my m340i. And the charging speed is extremely slow, probably 20mins charge only brings 1% of battery. If my iPhone is overheated, it becomes very slaggy as well, sometime CarPlay even got disconnected because of this.

I am using a iPhone XS Max with apple case. Anyone having the same issue here?

I'm using a Samsung Galaxy S10+ and I also have this issue with the phone getting extremely hot during charging on the m340 wireless charger. However the charge speed seems fine, I can get a decent amount of charge after 20 minutes.

The wireless charger in my 330 loaner didn't seem to work. Other loaners I had worked or seemed to launch Apple Pay.

Seems to be an issue on some of the newer X5's and X3's as well. One G05 actually killed the owner's phone from overheating!

I have the same issue! My iPhone XS Max gets really hot, even after just a short drive with it on the charger. I have several other wireless chargers but none of them give me this issue.

This may have to do with CarPlay if in use - there is a history of high battery usage and overheating.

Happens occasionally for me but I use CarPlay and have Google maps in satellite image mode so a lot of graphics processing over WiFi happing in that exchange.

As far as the charging rate, it is safer for your battery at least. Fast charge without automatic shutoff when full will impair the life of battery over time.

All this being said, could be an issue with the charger getting too hot as well - just sharing my experience as mine is even aftermarket since I do not have BMWs installed wireless charging and still happens for me.

I find when I drive any distance the transmission tunnel next to my knee gets really hot when I’ve got a phone charging. It’s so bad I rarely use the charger for more than 15 minutes.

Im using an iPhone xr. It gets warm but not to a point I'm worried about it. Nor do I feel heat at my knee. Sounds like either your phone cover, phone or charging pad are somehow faulty.

I frequently get the "iPhone needs to cool down" message when it is sitting in the charging tray. Especially when using CarPlay. Usually happens after after 45 minutes of driving.

I rang BMW (Australia) and they were very unhelpful. Spoke to the dealer and they said it was normal operation. Ridiculous, and probably dangerous.

I found that if you have the rear climate control on and set to fairly warm this doesn't help.

Huwaei P30 Pro also gets super hot when on charge. Definitely something to do with the tray as I use wireless charging pads in the house and the phone doesn't get hot on any of them.

Hi,

I use wireless charger in my 20 M340 to recharge my Samsung S8 in flip case quite often.

I have found that on occasion my does get quite warm and the charger's light changes from blue to orange-red. of course, phone stops being charged

Haven't figured out why?

At times, my phone will also get hot while using wireless charging. It is by no means a fast way of charging, either. After a 15 minute drive, my phone's battery increases around 6 percent - IF that.

Do you have Carplay running at the same time? If so and depending on how many apps running, it could be because the battery charge is outrunning the battery usage by a narrow margin. This is one problem with apps running / streaming and charging wirelessly at the same time (in general not just in the car). Sometimes best to just plug in. Still nice to be able to just sit the phone on the tray and have it charging (or one way of looking at it to operate without losing charge).

Same thing happened with the loaner X5 I had the other week and it was disconnecting my phone from CarPlay. Bet there's going to be a TSB or recall for this soon based off the replies on this thread
