Raced Nissan 350Z Stick
Just raced my neighbor, he has a stick shift 350Z, we took it to about 120, I kept pulling on him until 120, at about 80 MPH he was 1 and half cars behind me. I'm pretty impressed with the real life performance of this vehicle.

280HP 3.5 V6 Vs 255HP 3.0 I-6, interesting battle i'd like to see by "best motoring" or "fifth gear."

I agree though that the real-world performance of the BMW is spectacular! I'm tieing or beating cars that the specs and published 0-60 numbers say should take me--and I have an auto trans. |

Your friend doesn't know how to drive. I hate to burst your bubble, but the 350Z would beat a 330i. Sorry!!

Definitely! I love when all the magazine racers get a taste of real life when an "underpowered" BMW takes on their cars... I've taken on a G35 sedan auto (granted less power then the newer G35s infinitis, and it was auto im sure) more then once with my 325 2.5l E46..... Well there is still alot of schooling to be done, since most people read an HP blurb in a magazine and assume one car is faster then another. Go BMW
PS. The powerrating for BMW motors are not an average rating but the bare minimum any engine will produce, there are variances in engine build so some engines will be more powerful then others from the factory.. But the published data are the MINIMUM tolerance for the engine.. some have up to 5% more power.. When you compare that with traditionally overstated power ratings from the japanese engines (look at their torque curves, and laugh...) and you get the picture of how we will walk them everytime in the real world. |

most japanese car companies have adopted the new SAE standard- toyota/ lexus, honda/acura.(and have dropped in HP) but nissan/infiniti's are still holding out. i remember when the G35 engines went from 260 to 280 to 298 but in real world tests the difference was minimal. especially when it went from 280 to 298 becasue they actually lost 10/lbs of torque. so maybe nissan/infiniti's have a GOOD reason not to adopt until the next gen G37 because it might reveal the real numbers. (which BTW are respectable numbers. the VQ engines are pretty sweet) |

wonder who would really win. I looked up the specs on car and driver and the Z is faster both 0-60 and 1/4 mile. It seems that the 350Z would def. win hands down.

Edit: Also...Z drivers (being one, and knowing a lot of em), dont always take challenges when presented. Once in a while, youll see a kid out there trying to race everyone with his Zs, but not all of us do that. More often than not, we wont know we were racing...So you couldve beaten 10 Zs/Gs and none of them wouldve known theyve been in a race...And for educational purposes, Z's and G's are not the same. The Z is 3200 while the G is 3500. Same engine, suspension, 300 extra lbs to carry around. Our e90's 3300+ lbs. |

I totally believe this story. My friend the other day drove my step 330i and was VERY impressed. He drives a stick shift g35 coupe and he was very impressed at how quickly the engine revved and he told me that this car felt just as fast as his coupe. He is switching over to BMW and loved the d/s mode so much that he's currently debating between manual/step for his new 330i. Yesterday we decided to race each other to 100mph and i beat him by about 1.5 car lengths, then we did it again and that time i beat him by 2 car lengths. I felt so proud! I dont even care about the 335 coming anymore, this car is amazing!Never trusting magazine numbers again and btw he's decided to go with the steptronic.
