Question For the guys who got dark tints....

I'm talking 20% tint and under. Did you opt to go over the break light on the window or have them cut around it?

If you did not have them cut around the breaklight are you still able to see the light through the tint?

I do not really care law-wise because the cops around here dont bust your balls for petty stuff like that. I just dont want someone to smash into the back of me because they didnt see my breaklight.

Isn't it against federal law to have them tint over the break light? At least that is what the tint shop told me on my last car...

Since the brakelight unit touches the windscreen you must cut around it

This is no problem for a good tint place

nabutes - it probably is illegal but my tint guy will do it anyway. and the cops are pretty cool around here when it comes to tints so thats not a concern.

e90fleet - as long as the housing is easily removed my guy will do it. Also im not worried about him cutting it well if I opt to cut around it, he is a pro.

I would think twice if I were you. I had a friend in college that got in an accident and had 15% tint all the way around the car. An insurance guy came and looked at the wrecked cars and DIDN'T cover his because it was illegal tint and might have "hindered" his ability to see.

Well, ther is no reason not to cut around it, since ther is no clear glass above it, and all you would be doing by not cutting around it is loosing your 3rd brakelight

Thats one good thing about the break light being at the top of the window and not the bottom. I have 20% tints on my current car and the break light is at the bottom and it looks cheesy with it cut out.

I see cars without the break light cut out and it looks much better in my opinion. this is why im asking.

I don't see how cars look better without a break light but that's just me. I think safety > looks

the tint on the back window looks better without a box cut out of it. pretty easy to understand.

It might look better (I haven't gotten tints yet so can't be sure) but I would go with safety first. There are lot of drivers out there that has no idea what driving is..especially in NJ
