Used 03 Sl500

My trainer told me about someone in my neighborhood selling a used 03 sl500 with only 12000 miles . This gets better, the guy is only asking $63,000. Excellent condition and everything. Red with Ash (beige) interrior. Do you think its worth my dad taking a look at? He wants a SL500 but at this time it doesnt look like he will be able to get a new one (doesnt want to drop 100k on a car). I just wanted to hear your guys's input.

Me personally, I would rather have a 645 drop top. Sounds like a decent deal though...

My best friend's sister, her boyfriend had one but he didnt like it too much, so he traded it in and got a CLS55. He says thats the best car he ever owned. But i agree with bavarian19, 645-650i conv. is much better. Either is a better buy.

I like the 6 series a lot as a performance coupe. However, I find it very annoying that it still uses the "yestertech" ragtop convertible instead of a hardtop convertible. I bet that they will replace this in the next 2 years though with the hardtop convertible 3 series coming out, they wouldn't want the 6 to be outdone by the cheaper e93. It also depends what your dad is looking for. If he wants the performance, look no further than the 6 series. If he wants luxury and a more popular car then go with the SL.

We had planned to do a ED on the 6 this summer, but i dont think that will happen, maybe december. We have a lot of rennovations going on at our house. New addition to my parents bedroom, movie theater where living room was so it just doenst seem like its going to fit in. Honestly I would rather him get the 6 but my mom has always wanted a Red SL so i have a feeling that if he gets it, he will drive my moms 5 for the next 2 years (3 year lease total) adn then get himself a new car.

Doesn't your dad have a Aston Martin? I seem to remember you talking about it. If he has an Aston, why would he want that POS.

ragtops are lighter and easier to package than hardtops

hardtops eat trunk space up big time when the top's down, look at the slk vs Z4.....................

A nice ragtop is just as quiet

Good points! But ragtops don't seem to last as long and are more prone to damage, a real pain in the ass. If you want to use your trunk space, then just put the damn top up. just my .02

go hop in a modern Z4, 325 or some other newer 3 layer top car

it's pretty damn good (my Z's not as quiet as the 325, but quieter than the E36 I'd owned previously)

There are drawbacks to both hardtops and softtops, just depends on your priorities.

The 2 main advantages to a soft top are trunkspace and the speed of operation.

I can lower and then re-raise the top on my Z4 in the same time it takes to drop the top in the SLK.
Also look at the trunk of an SLK with the top down, good luck driving to the grocery store top down in an SLK....

hard top has advantages too, as noted above by others

AM V8 Vantage, got to see one and poke around in it about a month ago. It's a shame the dealer wouldn't let me test drive it. I'm only about 70k short.

But it is hot in person. He wouldn't even start it so I could hear the exhaust. He said they allow test drives after $5k deposit for a new Vantage. Pretty expensive ride unless you purchase one...
