2011 BMW 550i Fuel line quick connect.

So yesterday had one of those sphincter moments where the quick connect fuel line on the drivers side leading to the fuel pump became unconnected. Spilling fuel all over the engine bay. Turns out it was missing that gray clip that stops the cap from being pushed in when one wants to disconnect the line. My question, never knew it was missing after driving the car for almost a 6 months after being serviced for worn valve guides. Am I correct to assume that gray clip just doesn't come off easily but has to be removed?

So in my car that gray clip is only on the yellow cap is missing on the black cap.

There should only be a clip on one side if at all. The clip is on the shock tower side.
