Anyone gone from Manual to Steptronic? Help!

Hi All,

Great board here, very informative. I am getting ready to place my order for a new E90 330i. I currently drive a manual 2003 325i. My previous car was a 1995 325i which was a manual as well.

I can't even believe I'm saying this, but I am considering getting an auto this time. Any of you made the switch from manual to auto? Did you regret it? I don't want to have buyer's remorse down the road. The main reason I'm considering an auto is for the added convenience in city driving, and also so others in my household can drive the car.

I drove the 330i a couple weeks ago. IMO, better than the E46 in every aspect....the car feels amazingly solid and fast. It was a steptronic too. I'm afraid to take the manual for a test drive :-).

Cheers.

Thumbs up

hi unxdawg. make sure u test drive the manual before u order your steptronic. if u are a hard core manual shifter guy like myself, i would stick with the manual. AVOID the steptronic. the manual with the m short shifter is really sweet, smooth and short throw. i had a e36 manual, e46 steptronic and now a e90 manual. hated the steptronic thoroughly. but u have to make your final decision. not a difficult choice after you have tasted the sweet manual box.

Yes and yes. This is my fist automatic car ever in over 20 years of driving. Steptronic is a big dissapointment for me. At first I thought it was great and was kind of enjoying the change but that feeling quickly wore off. Thankfully I have a lease so this is only temporary.

Stick shift is fun to drive sometimes. City driving is okay too. But when there are traffic jams, it's a bitch. I went with steptronic for the added convenience. IMHO steptronic is perfect for me. If I wanna shift I can always put it in Sport mode. hehehe

edit: driving in cities like SF was a factor but with the uphill assist, it's no longer a problem. You dont have to use the handbrake anymore. But if other people in your household cant drive stick, steptronic is your only other option.

BMW steptronic with sport mode manual shifting still does not feel like a sporty, pleasurable drive for me. starting on hills just needs good clutch, gas control. any comments.

Thanks guys. Test driving a manual is next. I think my decision will be easy then.

The reason I was pushing for a steptronic is that my gf and I were planning on having one vehicle (we don't really need two, want to save $) and she can't drive a manual (and doesn't really want to learn/deal with the hassle -- I've already been down that road :-).

I absolutely love the amount of confidence my current e46 325i gives me (sport package and manual). In spirited driving, i always feel like i can put the car anywhere i want and it just goes (very neural). I think part of that feeling comes from it being a manual. I guess I just don't want to lose that level of control since I've always associated BMWs with that characteristic. In any case, I shall report back!

Cheers

Sorry to go against the grain here, but this is an intensely personal issue. I struggled with this when the car was going to be mine, but since it's now going to be my wife's daily driver, we got the step. The decision was made for me.

I currently drive stick and have done all my life, but there are very few chances that I really get to enjoy it - and I drive a WRX (stick) which with it's turbo practically begs to be driven (ahem) enthusiastically. Consequently, MOST days I find myself wishing I had an auto. Bumper to bumper traffic with a manual just isn't fun, especially when there's no where enroute to open her up and ease the frustration.

If you're thinking twice, reach inside and think why. If you spend more time in traffic (like me) then you should really go with the step. I know that's blasphemy round here, but if you have any kind of a commute with traffic, your left leg will thank you in time...

The BMW step is a great Step. You've tried it, so you know. It does disconnect you from the driving experience, but not so much that won't be able to enjoy the car. 0-60 is hardly affected, and sport-mode is responsive enough for most situations. I'm not saying there won't be days when you wish you had the 6spd, but you have to look at the big picture.

---

Good luck!! Your next few posts will be will be:

- I-drive / No I-drive
- Premium package / No premium package
- Black or silver
- Black metallic or jet black
- Terra / No terra
- etc..

Just messing witchya - I've just been through all of this . My car arrives in Munich in May.

Looks like your choice is already made ... by your gf.
I suggest the next time you choose a gf, high up on your list of criteria should be whether she can drive a stick...

Thanks Gripster, good advice. I'm going to really think hard about this one.

Regarding "the next set of posts", I've been racking my brain on those for a while man :-). The only one I'm really stuck on is I-drive. Time will tell!

hi unxdawg, any chance u can teach your gf to drive a stick. my wife and i drive stick shifts, she was used to drive autos but now loves the stick shift better than the auto. we live in singapore, which is as urban and as clogged as cities get, but we like it. i will not make any further comments for now, least the steptronic boys think i am trying my best to brain wash you into not getting a steptronic..

I bought the E 90 330iA for the same treason and with the same trepidations. My wife is the principle driver.

As one who has primarily driven manual shift vehicles for many, many years I was plesantly surprised with the ZF tranny in the E 90. I can tell you that the automatic can deliver better (faster) acceleration than at least 98% of the people owning manual transmission E 90 cars can achieve.

Ok guys....so I went to the dealership and tested the a manual and stepronic one after the other. Both were 330is with sport package. I had decided beforehand that if i felt "wowed" by the MT I was going to get it, no questions asked. Now, remember I've been driving stick since I was 16 and am now 29. So I'm a hardcore MT guy.

Well, I think I'm gonna go for the steptronic. The manual was more fun to drive, but not as much as I expected. I didn't leave that car feeling like I absolutely needed the have the stick. And, the steptronic felt like a more solid ride overall, I really don't know how to explain it. And it felt just as fast. So, I think the decision is made!

Now I need to decide about whether to get I drive or not. I played with it for about 5 mins and found it difficult to use. Next time I'm gonna spend about 30 mins really diving into it so I can evaluate whether I want it or not. I honestly could not figure out how to turn the damn radio off :-). For me, it's gonna be about the navigation and how useful I think that is.

I shall report back!

Cheers.

I am 40 and have had a manual in most every car I have had and all the cars I have had in the past 15 years. I've had 16 cars. I am switching to an auto this time around. I think they finally got a pretty good auto in the bmw. Sure there are sometimes I will miss the manual, but I live in the city and really do a lot of stop and go and feel I would rather chill and not shift all the time. I just drove a 330 w/stick and one with step. I didn't feel the need to go stick this time around.

I went for the auto after testing both. The diesel produces so much torque that the gearboxes have to be set in concrete to take the strain and the manual shift is far too heavy.

i have the step.... after many years of owning a manual
i decided to switch due to the traffic factor.

Day to day when i space out and commute its fine.. or if im doing spirited driving its okay.

What it doesnt do that a manual is great for is holding gear in turns and downshifting when you want to.

If you are going to use the manual mode of the step... mine as well just get the stick to begin with and save your 1500

like many others, my last two cars were manual too but i finally got tired of getting stuck in 2 hrs of stop and go traffic in LA everyday. when i test drove the e90, i was actually a little disappointed by the manual. the throws are long the clutch pedal is soft and catches very high, not very sporty at all imo. the steptronic on the other hand was a surprise. gear changes were quick and smooth and in sports mode, the transmission does a really good job of keeping the engine in its sweet spot. sometimes when i leave work really late and the roads are open, i do miss driving a manual, but i would say 90% of the time, the steptronic works fine for me.

last 2 cars were manual. came back to auto. it was boring in the beginning.
but give it sometime and get used to it. there is a way you can make steptronic very very fun.

it makes me feel better everytime when all these people around me jerking their cars around because they are too busy shifting 1-2-N-2-1-N-1-N-1-2-N ~~~~~

becareful though. if you are looking for a huge fun factor in a car, manual is the only option that offers it. If there is no traffic to worry about in your area, I don't see why you would need an auto. honestly, if there was no traffic, I will never buy auto.

The e90 330i is luxury family 'sports' sedan and being one, it should be used as one. I don't see the point of using a sedan to go fast in or do street races with. For me, if i were to get a manual (for myself) it'll have to be a two doorer, it's not possible for me to drive a sedan and act or have a feel like i'm driving a sports car because to me a sports car resembles a coupe (except if its an M5 i'm sure). That's the reason to not buy a stick imo.

If traffic plays a big part of you daily life, then that's another reason to not buy a manual, it's just isnt practical in traffic.

The last point is, depends on who you will be sharing your car with, how much does it mean to you if you are able to share it. If you have a gf/fiance or wife and you want her to drive the car or she wants to drive it than the choice is clear...remember that the step has the sports mode which you can use when you are driving. Sure it's won't be the same as driving a fully manual car, but hey you got both worlds at your convenience. Life is about taking the good with the bad....

I think the 330 with the step is fantastic and more fun than any auto i've driven. I leave mine in d/s mode most of the time. My friend, who has a manual g35coupe, drove it the other day and was amazed at how responsive and quickly the transmission shifts and how it holds the gears in d/s mode. He was also very impressed with how quickly this engine revs. He said that this car felt just as quick as his coupe. He's switching to bmw and now he really cant decide between manual and step either. And also acceleration is virtually the same between step and manual, if anything i want to challenge a manual driver and see if he can out accelerate the d/s tranny. Maybe 5-10% of you can.
