435d Walnut Blasting. Experiences?

The 435d is at 75k.
Some mornings the idle is a bit high and lumpy.
Feels a bit down on power on lower RPM but absolutely fine after.

Had EGR recall. Not replaced but cleaned and reassembled. Don't think it's the EGR.

Thinking about having it walnut blasted.
Place in Camberley called TVG Automotive.

Thanks

Other than the odd hard start in winter the car always starts. The pre-warming took 30 seconds some days. No white smoke on start up. There are days when there is no lumpy idle. No fault codes. Will connect up to it and try check parameters if there any for the glow plugs.

Someone did a write-up on the Forum about TWG and he was happy with their service.

I had my 30D walnut blasted at Autowerx in Milton Keynes and they did a good job. Can't say I noticed a night and day difference, but it TRVs more sweetly to the top end. The inlet manifold and ports were getting quite heavily fouled and it's good to have them thoroughly cleaned.

Had my 520d walnut blasted by PMP cars in Nuneaton, definitely noticed a difference. It was done just shy of 100k miles and I got to see the inlet manifold and intake ports before they were cleaned and I was quite shocked how much crap had accumulated!

It felt like it just 'pulled' a lot stronger

Good to know. I used them to carry out a compression test and leak down test years ago. Were they expensive? TWG have quoted £380 including VAT.

Price updated. They quoted the wrong amount.

I think I paid £350 including cleaning the inlet manifold. The IM can't be opened so they used a combination of mechanical (screwdriver to break-away larger chunks of carbon/deposits) and chemical (carbon-attacking gel).

The whole process took around 5 hours.

I have found that the engine is running a lot smoother now, but it seems to be a combination of factors : clean IM and ports; Archoil AR6400-D Max engine / fuel system / DFP cleaner; and having the EGR coded closed (to all - spare me the lecture; I am not convinced that the theoretical benefits of EGR for NOX reduction outweigh the additional maintenance costs and fuel consumption).

Coding the EGR closed has made the biggest positive difference to engine smooth running. The annoying diesel tapping on light throttle between 1500-2000rpm has now all but gone, which supports my suspicion that this was related to poor combustion when the EGR was open.

Last week I did an intermediate oil change. Used LiquiMoly engine flush to (if you believe the bumf) clean all the internals, oil pathways, piston rings, etc. Yes, modern oils should have sufficient detergents to do this, but there's no harm in using a dedicated flush. Castrol GTX 5/30 LL04 and an OEM oil filter.

It's running better now (83,000 miles) than it ever has : smooth, pulls well, less harsh above 4,000rpm, and the lack of diesel tapping (probably 90% gone) has been long awaited.

It was done as part of the remap. Not sure they'd want me broadcasting it, but several tuning companies offer it.

Interesting and cheap EGR delete mod, but let us know whether the engine runs smoother, engine warning light and error codes (if you check for them).

Error codes as mentioned in the link.
Check engine light.
Runs smoother though and 1-2 mpg increase.
Going to get a tune to have it coded out and bypass the cooler.
