from the looks of the bits they look like they were impact torx bits too. I have never seen that happen and usually its the actual screw that strips instead of the bit itself.

Okay, agreed, but the obvious question is... where did you get those cheap-ass tools?

Or don't buy torx bits with hollowed out centers?

Impact tools are made from a softer steel to absorb the impact motion. Were you using an impact wrench? I only have Chrome torx bits

I think having a mix of good tools and cheap tools is the sweet spot. I love some of my HF tools.

Security Torx bits are always weaker than regular Torx bits because they are hollow.

I'd just use the regular hex head unless it was completely fubar?

Dude, even a $5 6-pack of beer is bad; you should have known better

Yeah I think this is also why IMO.

Impact tools are softer in nature to compress and take hard impact hits.

So putting a steady amount of torque by way of ratchet is bound to risk damaging or bending/distorting the socket.

Yup, I learned the hard way with some cheap tools, in the form of one of those China Craftsman Evolve socket sets. I was working on my Jeep's suspension and the ratchet decided to break internally while tightening a bolt (wasn't even all that tight yet). My hand slipped because of the awkward position I was in and slammed against the control arm.

I threw the ratchet in the trash. I wasn't even going to bother with a warranty replacement since they would've given me the same garbage in return from the only Sears around which is now 50 miles away.

I've been buying used SK tools on ebay for under $10 and they have all been excellent.

Impact tools are indeed a bit softer, but that's not what happened here. Those are not impact tools, it's just cheaper to finish cheap tools with black than it is to chrome them. These were cheap tools with cheap finish.

The Torx bits with center holes are used for "security" Torx bits that have a prong in the center that the center hole fits around. I've used the set I have for both "security" and regular Torx screws. Looks as though the set used by the OP were very cheaply made.
