So I'm dropping off my 06 330i with a valet, and thought why not lock my valuables in the trunk, then lock the trunk via the glove box switch.

I gave the car away, came back. Went to unlock the glovebox, but thought to test the valet key and sure enough it's able to unlock the glovebox. Wasn't the whole point of this thing that it couldn't unlock the glove box and that the engine would die after a few KM?

Thankfully nothing was stolen. Not that I expected it to be, but you know, why not be extra pretentious.

To save readers the trouble...

The plastic key is the emergency key. The metal key that slides out of the key fob, when pulled out of the fob, turns the fob into the valet key, only if the valet switch is set and the glove box is locked with the metal key.

If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

Valet is only by giving the actual key to valet minus the metal insert and forgetting about this whole spare in the glove box.

No wonder they discontinued it. So dumb.

I'll check the manual just in case when I get home and update the thread.

Actually, I like them. I placed one in a key holder and hid it underneath the car.

Keys get lost and misplaced, and sometimes it happens away from home. Every car I have owned, I have placed a hidden emergency key on it. They have saved me a number of times over the years.

I thought the spare plastic key is something you keep at home so you know you always have a key if you loose the others.

And yeah the valet point is that no one can steal valuables from the trunk or glove box as you have the metal key and the trunk buttons are deactivated.

I keep my plastic key in my wallet in case I loose my keys when I'm around.
