Mud Flaps

Just got an email back from my dealer and he said the mud flaps plus installation would be $191. I have read that circle bmw sells the entire set for $50 plus shipping i believe.

My question is should i try and install them myself? I believe that the 3 series needs a special jack, but im not sure. I read the DIY and it seems pretty simple, if i cant do it im sure i know someone who can. I guess im just conserned about the jack. I guess i want to know if everyone thinks i should just order the flaps from circle or pacific and install myself or pay the dealer to install?

I've put flaps on previous cars. By the time you jack up the car, pull the wheels, install the flaps (which never go on as easy as the instructions claim), remount the wheels, etc. you will have several hours of work. It certainly can be done, but I had the dealer install the flaps on my E91 before we took delivery. I just didn't feel like messing with it.

PSUBALL10: They must be asking for 1.5 hrs labor and change?? Quite steep...if I were you I'll push your CA for a price break...considering you are ordering/buying one.

DIY seem like a major PITA...from the looks of it, its strictly a wheels off exercise...at least on non-xi models. I wonder if the xi gives more clearance...you might want to check.

I, too, am looking at the mudflaps (post delivery). Pushed my CA down to no more than 0.5 hr labor (maybe less, he said)...waiting for them to get the rears in (they're out)...

I think you shoulg get the car first then decide if you want the mud flaps.

To me, they take alway from the clean lines of the E90.

I don't like them at all.

The mud flaps are definitely up to personal tastes...but if you have to have them...darker colors (like SG and Black) would carry them better...

There should be a DIY in the DIY forum for them

Have a look and see what you think

I find them very subtle. Putting them on the xiT was an easy decision. Putting them on the sedan would take more thought, but even so I think they would look fine. Simply a matter of choice.

Not worth it IMO. In fact, I'd be more worried about them allowing snow to freeze up the the wheel well.

Agreed. K-Mart's automotive has a great deal of experience installing mud flaps... <g>

they are real easy to install. as long as you a bit handy and dont mind working with tools then do it yourself. It took me about 1.5 hours at the most, and i was taking my time. Dont pay for someone else to do it.

If you have a floor jack and have proficiency in removing nuts and bolts as well as using a screwdriver and drill, the process is easy and quick. It shouldn't take a slow operation longer than 1.5 to 2 hours and that's will lots of time to lazily do it.

Get a floor jack and use the frame pieces under the car to jack it up, NOT any floor points. Make sure the secure the front wheels with blocks as you will jack up the rear. It's good to be safe.
You can do one wheel at a time, it's really easy.

I bought mine from Bavarian for my E46. They look and work great.
It keeps the car looking cleaner MUCH longer than without them.

If you have more time than money or you don't know how to use simple tools, then by all means have the dealer install them.

I've had mine on my E46 for 3 winters, NO freeze up at all.
And, the car stays cleaner much longer as the salt, dirt, and grime aren't contiuosly thrown onto the fenders as easily or as much.
BMW flaps are nicley contoured and fit quite well.
They flow with the body quite nicely.
I actually think they add a cool appearance.

PSU - Check this post for an excellent example of mud flaps on an E90 (MARKAR's car):

Thx for all the info guys, i emailed the dealer and told him that i could get the parts for $50 + shipping from Circle BMW and that i didnt think the $140+ he was charging me for labor was fair, when the job shouldnt take more than an hour. Haven't heard back from him yet. But i feel pretty confident that i can do it myself, i was just worried about jacking it up.

And it isnt really about the money it is more about prinicple. After all the money im spending i dont think that asking the dealer to cut me a deal is out of the question
