Fuel economy of 640i GT xDrive M sport
I have been driving diesel cars since 2005, don't quite know the progress / development of the petrol engines nowadays. I am recently considering a 640i GT xDrive M sport. For you guys already having one, especially UK users, how is the fuel economy? How close is it to the claimed MPG?
Many thanks... |

I'd suggest posting on the 5 forums and ask about a 540i to be honest. Then allow a few percent extra.
The 540i Touring is rated at 7.8-8.0l/100km depending on wheels and the 640 GT is 8.1-8.2l/100km so they will be very comparable. |

I have the exact car, picked it up 4 weeks ago. The economy is pretty shocking, and nothing like what's published (I think it's about 31mpg).
On the first 2 tanks, my right foot was feeling a little heavy, and for some reason my finger kept pressing the sport mode button. I got between 14 and 18 mpg. Determined to be slightly more sensible, on my 3rd tank, I decided to exclusively use eco mode, and intentionally drive super economically. I've been doing a mixture of short and long journeys (admittedly slightly more short than long), I'm getting about 22-23 mpg. But to give you an idea, immediately after filling up and resetting the clocks, I spent 30 mins on the motorway, all cruise controlled, all totally sensible, and I only achieved 27-28 mpg there. So how they publish over 30 mpg as a combined figure is totally beyond me. It may break the bank on fuel economy, but it is a lovely car to drive, and looks so much better in person than in BMWs crappy marketing shots. I love it. |

After driving diesel cars for 13 years, I was hoping the newer generations of petrol engine could be doing a lot better than before. I guess for a big car like the 6GT, it is still worth considering the diesel version. Thank you TheUKDave.

I specifically wanted petrol, as I had my first diesel car with my last car, and ... no thanks. Even just the goop on the occasional petrol pump handle is enough to put me off, but I'm not keen on how they drive either.
I will say that I've heard good, perhaps 'great', things about the diesel, both from reviewers and from dealers (but don't trust them, they have their own motives). But I just don't think it's for me. Plus I just wanted the fastest version of this car, if there were an M6 GT, I'd have had my eye on that! |

A few days after my previous message, I went for a test drive of a 630d GT xDrive M sport, and bought it.
The 6 cylinders engine does sound better than my previous 4 cylinders one. But I think for the UK motorway speed, 4 cylinder engine is good enough, and quiet enough in my previous 5GT. The coasting function in the Eco Pro mode is interesting. The car rolls a lot longer distance than my previous car at the same road and same condition. The Adaptive mode is confusing, and doesn't feel much of difference. I am still using my first tank of diesel so far, so far it looks like around 38 MPG (UK MPG) for my daily town driving (short distance trips). That is the same fuel economy to my previous car - 520d GT. After a few tanks, I will know more precise average figures. |

i came from the 340i gt to the 630i gt and to be fair its 80 bhp down it holds its own, i found around town the 340 got as stated above and i found myself less and less having the opportunity of getting the most out of the 6 pot doing mainly town driving, on the motorway it was very smooth but again with the old plod being everywhere and the fines expensive i was always sat with cruise control set to 72, i sat in the 6 gt and was blown away with the difference in cabin style and settled on the 630i as a great compromise and really dont notice the power difference

I'm thinking on getting 640GT ...just FYI - see attached MPG I was able to pull in my wife's 2 weeks old 2019 x5 40i ECO/CC@55mph most highway with about 10 miles thru the city streets.
