How often do you switch it into manual mode?

Being the new G20 will be auto only, for those that have had the automatic transmission already, how often do you actually drive in manual? I'm gonna miss the 6mt very much! Just was curious..

I have the Sport Automatic in my FBO F30 335i, and I probably enter manual mode nearly every time I drive for at least some small period of time. I'd say I'm in manual mode (M1-8) much more often than just moving over to sport (S1-8) and letting it shift itself. It's almost always either Drive or manual mode.

One other comment... I nearly always shift with the gear lever on the console. I'll exclusively use the paddles when on track, but on the street I shift with the gear lever.

In the beginning almost never. I thought that paddle shifters are useless. But, after a year I can't imagine to drive the car on windy road without use of paddle shifters. So good, so quick, always in right gear with exact torque I wish in that moment.

I just don't enjoy driving as much as I do without manual
My wife has automatic and it's just like ok hit the gas and that's it, its boring.. ove had an e46, e90, f30 all in alpine white in manual.. this auto thing doesn't make me happy.. why can't they make it a special order? Hell you can spend 6k on individual paint..

For me it is variable. Some days it is just the odd paddle intervention. Other days (on the right roads) I'll drive manually using a mix of shifter and paddles.

Most of the time, due to the traffic and roads I'm using, I just let it do its own thing in Drive, may intervene for a particular manoeuvre, like a rapid overtake. Sometimes that involves a simple shift to M/S, fulfil the manoeuvre, then back to Drive. Other times I'll use more shifter or paddle control.

It is the flexibility I enjoy, a sort of "how do I feel today?" driving mode.

I thought I'd miss MT. I was driving MT for over 35 years before I bought my first AT BMW. I'd driven many ATs during that time, but preferred MT for my own car. The 8-speed AT is the best yet, IMO.

I believe there is a skill level in driving an AT well, particularly if you want to 'connect' to the drivetrain and get satisfaction from driving. I go as far as say there is a high skill level to doing it well. (I know some MT users won't agree, as if MT is the way to control the gears). Working as one with the car's 'brain', being involved with the finer nuances of AT control is an acquired skill, just as driving an MT well is a skill. The way you use the throttle, the brakes, even the steering to change gears, hold gears, instigate engine braking , etc., can give a similar satisfaction as shifting with MT.

Some of my driving is out in the mountains, the sort of terrain that tests a good MT driver. I'm amazed at how much we can be in command of AT, get it to do exactly what we want in those more demanding conditions. Yes it can do it itself, but to be one step ahead, if we want to be, is very rewarding.

I use manual mode to make the mppsk sound better. With SAT the shifts are fast in sport mode and lets off a crackle in the exhaust with each shift.

I just feel like even with the manual mode you still don't feel as connected to the car like you do with manual.. I haven't driven an 8 auto so that's just my perspective..

Agreed. But that doesn't mean the experience is completely lacking enjoyment. The rapid-fire sequential shifter can be quite addicting.

Same here.

If I really, really, really feel the need to row the gears, I take the E30 out for a spin.
