If it is the same lame key as before you could always have it converted to an X5M key :

Thanks andrewc89; will take a look at that option. I think BMW addressed all issues from previous M2 with the exception of the key fob! Anyway, better having an old key than regular non-M side mirrors

I respectfully disagree. You don't forget about it because the standard key is shaped like a football. Not only is in uncomfortable but you might occasionally click a button by accident, or worse yet that bulge in your pants might get people thinking you have strong feelings for them.

Now, assuming you don't keep your key in a purse, which one of these do you think is more comfortable to carry around with you?

That's good points, thanks for sharing the DYI! I would definitely do it also but it's not on my list of top priorities..

I know they are going to change the keys fob for the next generation BMW anyways.. The new X5 has keyless-go where you can open/start the car with an APP on your phone.

The G30 5 series M Sport also has that great looking M key fob.

I think the keyless by phone idea is super cool and way overdue, but a part of me can't help thinking about Murphy's law every time a convenience feature like that is introduced. If your battery dies or the app crashes, you'll be shit out of luck in a parking lot somewhere staring at your car from the outside.

I suspect it’ll be the same key as before, but good god. That’s a large key.

I know this might sound extreme: but the key for my M3 (F80) is the single biggest gripe about the car. Every generation they make the damn things bigger WITHOUT ADDING ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONALITY!

For God's sake look at the E46 key with the same 3 buttons:

And they keep making each generation larger.

I can't tell you how many times I have come out from work and found my trunk open, or have set off my alarm from buttons being pushed in my pocket. And no: I don't wear skinny jeans!

They've made the damn thing so big and oddly shaped that the buttons can be easily pushed by other keys on your ring or things in your pocket. I would be SO STOKED if my upcoming M2C has a new key.

If I end up with an M2/M2C I might be tempted to try to design one. Don't really have the free time in any case unfortunately .

Had this same issue. So I bought a nice case for it and never had any issues after that.

(sorry for the crap pic)

If you switch to the X5M key, you probably also want to get a new key cut for it. Incase you're battery dies you won't be locked out of the car.
