Insurance shock - 335d versus 340i

Coming to the end of my 335d lease and having decided we like the form factor and day to day liveability, or whatever, but have become bored of it just casually got a quote for a 340i which Id imagined would be dramatically different to insure

Which it is by 10%

Cheaper!

I went from a 435D to an S5 and mine reduced also - BMW was a group 43, Audi was 42! It would seem diesel engines are more expensive to repair possibly? Or it could be newer safety tech on the newer model! Aviva asked about auto braking (which the S5 has) and it reduced the premium slightly too! Although I'm sure most insurance companies just pick the highest number they think they can get away with!

Cheaper!

A few years ago I did a quote on a new F30 335i and that was more than 10% cheaper than an E90 320d

Im pretty sure the premium is directly from a random number generator.

Many years ago I went from a 1.25 Mk4 Fiesta to an E36 328i Sport Coupe. While the premium did increase it was only about £25 a year. Which was nice.

I spent a while looking to buy a 335D. I'd planned on costs for the insurance for the 335D and got numerous quotes. When I changed my mind for the 340i I noticed that all of the quotes were a good chunk cheaper for the 340i.

My guess is the 335D is common of muck and lots of twunts smash them up VS the 340i which is far far less common so less numpties smash them.

In shock news, people with faster cars have higher insurance premiums

340i - 0-60 5.2 (manual box) or 5.1 (auto)
335d - 0-60 4.8

Not sure why it's so surprising.

Yes that explains why an E90 320d costs more to insure than an F30 335i

Not really surprising. infact I've been shopping for insurance for my m3 which is hardly any different to my 340i.

It won't be performance related, probably more to do with the % of higher mileage drivers in 335ds so stylistically probably have more accidents.

Garage List
2018 BMW M3 CP  [10.00]
My quotes for going from my 335d worth probably £17k albeit with a tuning box to an M3 which is over £80k list puts it about the same price - there really is no logic to it...

Therefore the claims are higher. Let's face it, if you drive a 335d instead of a 340i, you're nearly as mad as me. And that's on the sharp end of mad
And LobB only THINKS he drives a car. He is actually bouncing around his padded cell right now trying to write a love letter for Brigand with his own feces.

I changed to a F31 330i from a 18d X1 and the premium was unchanged. Pleasant surprise for a change as I had budgeted to pay quite a bit more.

No you've got it wrong... He always turns up at the trackdays that get organised on here... He never just sits at home telling everyone how awesome he is..

The insurance companies are switched on to the fact that xDrive owners love nothing more than racing in the rain.....which of course is frowned upon.
