Had My E93 330d Remapped Today !
Well I finally took the plunge and got my car remapped today, it wasn't that slow I just knew there was potential there and couldn’t resist.
I don't want to open up the debate on which mapper is the best so I will give you my thoughts and the dyno results, I wanted to get my car mapped by someone known in the industry, for a reasonable price and have the car dynoed before and after. Based on my selection criteria I went to www.evolveyourcar.com in Luton which is run by Sal (M5Pilot) as he has knowledge with BMW's and a Dyno Dynamics Dyno which seems to be industry standard. So the steps during the remapping: Had a chat about what I wanted (basically no loss of anything anywhere on the curve) but not pushing too far. A laptop was used on the OBD port to see if there were any problems or error messages (Luckily was OK) The ECU code was then downloaded via the OBD and saved as a backup (I asked for a copy and got it to bring home on a USB key) The car was then put on the dyno, tyre pressures checked and temperature sensor fitted in position and a baseline measurement taken. Then some talking and the ECU file with I guess some parameter change details were emailed off to Europe somewhere (I guess Germany) for the ECU code to be decompiled, the parameters changed and then recompiled. The new ECU file was uploaded in a few minutes via the OBD port (the ECU was never touched) and another dyno run taken, note that the car stayed on the dyno without being touched so the temp sensor was not moved or changed in any way. One point to note was that they said if I lost the map for any reason they would put it back on for free. Sal also explained to me how the dyno figures can be fudged and ran another dyno on my car which was 314bhp, not a real figure but shows how easy it can be to make it read almost what you want. Standard my car is supposed to be 231bhp 500Nm Baseline dyno run 234bhp 550Nm Quoted figures 280bhp 660Nm (I had a stage 2 which increases the torque another 10%) Remapped dyno run 280bhp 660Nm So an extra 46bhp and 122Nm over the baseline dyno figure The car obviously feels quicker, I now can make the traction control light flash!!, the car before seemed to run out of steam before when the car changed up automatically, now the power runs up a bit higher in the rev range which is noticeable when running up through the gears. On the run to Luton my mpg was reset, 40mpg on the way up using a mixed driving style, on the was back after being reset 44mpg a little hard to believe but when doing seventy the dash says is doing 50mpg Overall impression, good bunch of guys who seem to know what they are doing, car feels much faster and a little smoother and the mpg on a run seems to be better, I am very happy with the results and performance gains. Now I definately need to fit that LSD Now the graph |

Stage 2 remap and 2 dyno runs £515 (Inc VAT) but I think thier prices may be changing. If gets overwritten they will put it back for free. I talked to Sal about posting and he said it was fine. Now much down on a mapped 335d but mine has lots of extra steel bracing |

looks like you had a good map, i think e maps, superchips, and dms and yours are all good mappers same as giving free back up maps and taking it off for free, it just what you feel like who to go with,i think its a must with all diesels as they give much better power after the map

congratulations on your latest mod .. im sure there will be more to come
£515 seems a little expensive though, but as long as your happy with it , and it sounds like you are in my opinion if you only get 2 mods it has to be REMAP and LSD, listen to me im on about my 20th mod enjoy Gary

Probably not, what i think you are seeing is the turbo hitting maximum flow capacity at about 3250rpm. A larger turbo would be required to keep the power increasing to 4K and only then if enough fuel could be put in.

Ok, so what effect would this have on a manual car? Can the manual gearbox handle the additional torque?

'NathanJT' - it's the same question I want an answer to as I have a manual. I've heard there are more problems with the auto as opposed to a manual but not sure quite why. In my simple understanding I'd have thought a manual would be stronger than an auto due to being more 'mechanical', if that makes sense, however doesn't explain why you can't get a manual in a 335d or 535d!?!?!?
One reason why this remap was more expensive than others is surely partially because of the dyno runs in the deal??

Some manufacturers limit torque in first and second gear to avoid damage due to excessive torquegoing thru the box. This maybe why the 35d's are not available in manual, it is esaier to limit the engine output with an autobox as their is a seperate ECU for the gear bax which talks to the engine ecu. |

It may be more mechanical but the auto can deal with huge torque much more easily because it has, erm, a torque convertor Essentially you can't break the viscous coupling fluid and it will just slip excess torque. On a manual you could hold revs at 2000rpm (or wherever max torque is on the map), put it into first with your nice grippy 19" alloys, and bang the clutch in. Then you could get out and pick up all the oily bits of your transmission and diff which will now be on the floor.

Impressive figures there Crimson, you must be well pleased with it.
It's a shame you can't get the scissors out and 'feather' in the hard top,it would reduce the weight, and your MPG enhancement mod would be even more impressive on the road

It think it has the same box as the 335D the GA6HP26Z which is rated at 600Nm looking at the manufactures data but they always under rate anyway.

I think they don't do a manual d to save the clutch and transmission as they can control the speed of gearchange in software, the gearchange is slower than the change in the 320i for sure, the manual would be lighter and have less transmission loss which would be nice. Thanks for you comments guys, I like leaving it in DS mode at around 2k and just flooring it, makes me smile just have to remember to take my foot off as it build speed fairly quickly. |
