Getting a car title in Virginia

Question re: titling a car in Virginia...

I paid off my loan on my old car and have a lien satisfaction letter and the title from my bank. Am now selling that car, so I need to get a new title for the buyer.

My bank had said that the buyer could sign the title and bring the lien satisfaction letter to the DMV, and then get a new title for herself. But I'm thinking I want to do the lien satisfaction myself and get a clean title in my name, and then sign that over to her - just for the sake of certainty.

So, my question is - if I go to the DMV or one of the DMV Direct centers (like in Arlington County offices), they will do all this and hand the new title to me in person, right? Or do they have to mail the title to me?

if you have the letter, they can reproduce the title at DMV for 5$ or so.
Then you just sign it over and the new person titles it in VA.
it's really that simple.

+1 Tru Dat. I agree too, less hassle all the way round and no anxiety for the new buyer. He/she will see your "No Liens" title.

All set. Went to the DMV Direct location in Arlington this AM. They were able to get me the new title, in the clear, for $10. I was just worried they'd say, yes we can do this, but we will have to mail it to you and it would take a week or two.
