M235i track advice. Oil starvation

I had two engine replaced due to oil starvation. M235 is not designed the track use and for higher lateral G forces. If you planning to use you car at the track I recommend to install M2 (M235R) oil sump and the oil pan this will keep the car from being starved for oil.

Several different tracks. I was running street tires with modified suspension, but I was pushing really hard.

Can you elaborate more on replacing the oil sump? Did you actually do this ? I was looking into this a while ago.

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/part...20Racing&mg=11

you will need following parts:

01 Suction pump 1 11417846385
02 Drive Shaft 1 11417848466
05 Cover lid FOR RETURN LINE 1 11418335879

01 Oil pump 1 11418011851
02 Suction pipe 1 11417846384

01 Oil Pan 1 11137854463

I bought used oil pan, suction pump and oil pump from M4. Also you need cover lid FOR RETURN LINE that you can order from the dealer. That part is used on M235R racing version. All those parts exactly the same as M235R cup, so you don't need to make modifications to retrofit them. Right now I have no problem with the engine so far.

That's pretty cool. Did you do it yourself or have someone install it?

I'm curious if you had to pull the engine or were able to swap it on the car?

I takes about 2-3 hours to swap everything. Just need to take front axle support off, remove the oil pan and replace all the parts. Same work as oil pump replacement. No need to remove the engine. I did it at the local shop .

Any idea if this got corrected on the M240, B58 engine? I’m thinking that I won’t track my hard enough for this to be an issue, But still scary to hear. I just got done replacing an engine in my mini and really don’t want to do that again

B58 is completely different engine with different oil pan and oil pump. This system looks much better on the schematics (http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=11_6357) then N55, but it is still a road car that not designed for extreme track use. I would stay away from R Compound tires. I think for autocross courses both cars should be ok. Just keep oil level at maximum

You're the first to report this issue in the M235. Lots of guys track these cars too.

What "street" tires are you running? Does your car see a lot of track time?

I'm not the only one who had engine problems at the race track with M235. Friend on mine had the same engine failure at the different race track due to oil starvation. Same exact thing with his brand new car. His engine was replaced under factory warranty. May be warranty issues keep people from reporting track engine failures. Who knows.

I only did about 5 laps, but I they were timed laps driven 10/10. If I drove 9/10 may be I could've done 1000 laps. I drove a lots of different cars such as e46 M3, Porsche GT3, Audi R8, Renault Megan RS, Mercedes GTS, Ferrari 458 and many more at the same race track with the same pace with no problems.

If there was no problem with oil starvation, racing version M235R would't have oil sump and oil pan from M2. It's all depends on how much speed you carry through the corners and how hard you are driving. Standard car can take quite a bit of track driving, but I guess, its all depends.

i just got back from willow springs which is a pretty big track with a few pretty big oil starvation corners in it and honestly the car was fine. i overfilled the oil just a bit prior to actually running the track and all was fine man.

Curious, I just did an oil change and put 6.5 liters in and checked the oil. It's said it was ok and was exactly at the max line. Although it does show a range above max that looks to be in the "ok" area.

Will the graphic actually show if oil is slightly above max? How did you determine you were putting just above max?

Well the n55 take 7qts so i used that spec to slightly over fill it

I never had an issue with oil.. I can see if you are running a true endurance event how this would be an issue.

Fuel is a known issue.
When i get to 1/4 tank left, i have to refill or it will starve and go into limp mode. The stage 2 lpfp from fuel it seemed to make this more of an issue vs. the stock fuel pump.

Just curious, but how did your friend get his engine replaced under warranty when it happened on the track? Did your 2 previous engines also get replaced under warranty?

It was not racing or competition. Dealers decision about warranty based on the engine log and service history. They can see all the engine parameters right before the engine failure.

Happened to me, sucks because it's a big track we have, and the car will drink about 1/4-1/3 tank fuel each 20 minute session. Either have to bring spare fuel, or drive into town to fuel up mid day, kind of annoying, but such is life...

There are another issue with M235 with ZF automatic transmission. ZF 8HP45 is rated for maximum 450NM of torque or 330 FT/LB. I know a few racing teams who already replaced this transmission on their M235R cup cars even though racing version has the same 333 hp and under 460 Nm torque as standard M235i. So it is good idea to keep torque under 450Nm if you decide to put JB4 or any other chip. Power is not the problem. You can easily have 450 Nm of torque (330 Ft/lbs) and 400 whp by adding more boost on hight RPM. This way your transmission will last much longer and you'll have much less turbo lag and better throttle response with the engine.

"The volume production basic transmission, designed for up to 450 Nm, a maximum engine speed of 7,200 rpm and a racing service life of 30,000 kilometers https://www.zf.com/corporate/en_de/m..._22177768.html"

tq is fine up to 500 with zf 8 long term. Once you start hitting 550+ is when things start to get hairy.

I bring 5 gal cans of fuel, or just use the ms100 at the pump for outrageous prices.

krisa, thanks for the head's up on this, but do you remember what your oil levels were when you started? Seems like you can overfill a little bit and maybe that'd make a difference?
