Any grinding as if it were the synchro's going out?
I wonder if you have a collapsed motor mount that's got everything moving around too much and not letting the shifter do its job. Not to mention the factory shifter really really sucks... |

How old is your transmission fluid? I would start with transmission fluid change and if you are using OEM I would consider upgrading to something better, personally I prefer Redline.
I used to have similar issue on my 08 e93, but then I changed fluid to Redline and installed UUC short shift kit and it got much, much better. |

My money is on the motor mounts, at 75k mi they are due to be replaced. You should replace the trans fluid too. The OEM fluid is actually very good, personally I would stick with that over Redline but Redline would be fine too if you already have it.

Motor mounts, trans fluid, shift linkage bushings, and trans bushings in that order would be my suspects. Clutch is a possibility. Internal trans problems unlikely — synchros have had issues but that is a downshift thing.
