Jerking engine when the car stop
Hello guys
When i drive and stop on for example on a traffic light, i feel that the engine is jerking - very smooth not to hard. i think this is not normal. I did the break in service before one week and they can't fing anything...Did you feel also a jerking of the engine when the car is stopped? no matter if the gear is in N oder D position. Thank you |

If this is regarding auto stop/start on the motor , yes it does feel like the car is shaking and moving when the motor stops , and also sometimes when it starts again- at least in my X1.

You might be describing "rough idling". not on my car but a few posts on this forum have reported misfire when idle, and even triggered a CEL and threw a code... on a brand new car. I would assume the cars were not driven hard and possibly still in break-in period.

I am pretty sure I know what you are talking about. I am assuming you have a DCT? If you had a manual and coast to a stop in N you would not feel anything, of course. In the case of the DCT it is just a combination of the clutch working as needed and slow rpm that creates this feeling. I think what you are experiencing is completely normal, and you will feel this a bit more when it is colder out.
In higher performance cars you will feel things like this in regards "things feeling rougher". In an X5 it will feel like silk when coming to a stop. Edit: I missed you saying when in N too. In this case I would first think brakes. A caliper possibly not releasing right and as the rotor spins it is being grabbed a little. Hmm... Last edited by M2joey; 12-22-2017 at 09:08 AM.. |

The engine doesn't jerk so I'm not sure what you're referring to. I think you're talking about the transmission and how it shifts into first as you slow down. FWIW in manual cars it's rare to downshift into first just because of how awkward it can be. In DCT this shift is quite harsh which one of the many reasons manufacturers are going to automatic boxes.

If you do NOT want your car to turn off every time then you push the button to the OFF position. On means it will turn the engine off if your at a stop for more than a few seconds. Your engine hesitation is likely linked to this, I turned mine off the first day I got the car and has been off since. I hated it. If you already know this then obviously disregard what I'm saying.
