Next gen G80 M3 renders and speculations by Autobild

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
http://www.autobild.de/videos/video-...-12676863.html

Speculative specs (translated by CanAutM3):
  • Will be lighter with a new platform
  • Will use a development of the 3.0 liter 6-cylinder twin turbo with ~475ps base, ~500ps for the "M3 Competition"
  • AWD with RWD at the flick of a swicth reserved for the bigger and heavier M5, M3 will be RWD only
  • 6MT will continue to be offered
  • Should get more expensive going from current 77.5k Euro to about 80k Euro

It should be emphasized that this is just an artist’s guess. The artist may have studied the G20 test mules to get a basis for proportions; or just completely winged it. Either way, the finer details are totally made up - guesses based on the current car and what one might imagine a future M3 could look like. Just as someone who tried to render the F80 back at the end of 2010 would not likely have come up with something that accurately reflects the real thing (which was not captured uncovered until sometime in 2013), we should similarly treat this rendering like the complete fiction that it is.

While these specs are believable, we should treat this as purely speculative. Is it possible that some of this was vetted through inside sources? Sure. But we don’t know that and should assume it is all guesswork (and I know you know this, I just wanted to say it here for others who read this thread and may not be aware).

That being said, we know the upcoming X3 M will get an S58 with somewhere around 450hp (could be more, but certainly less than 500hp) in 2019. So, the use of this engine in the next M3 makes a great deal of sense. I personally consider this to be a near certainty. Similarly, the continued use of RWD and the option for a manual transmission also make sense and would jibe with what I would say is prevailing belief.

As always, I encourage everyone to stay tuned to BimmerPost for the latest on the next generation 3 Series (now just one year from debut) and M3 (about three years from debut).

In the US, I expect the next M3 to start at about $68,500 and the M4 at $69,600 or so.

Is the 2020 release a MY2020 in 2019 or a MY2021 in 2020?

Since this a German video where the North American concept of "model year" does not exist, I have to assume it means start of production in 2020 and likely MY2021 for us North Americans.

And in fact, an early 2021 release as MY2022 is probably more likely yet.

Just as the the F80 trailed the F30 by over two years, the same situation is probably going to happen for the G80 as compared to the G20. Remember, the last E90 M3 was built in late 2011 as an MY2011, and the F80 did not arrive until early 2014 as an MY2015. That’s a gap of just over two calendar-years, and in fact a three model year hiatus. With the last F80 M3 known to be coming in late 2018 as an MY2018, we can expect that there will be no MY2019, MY2020, nor MY2021 while we wait for the successor to drop in early 2021 as an MY2022.

In the past I’d mentioned the chance of the M3 coming closer on the heels of the 3 Series. While this has technically been a possibility with every generation, it has yet to happen. Unfortunately, based on comments recently from SCOTT, I don’t expect to see this change with the next generation. So, while I would not yet completely rule it out, as things stand now the odds do not look good.

468 bhp seems a little underwhelming if true.

Seems "enough" to me, but I did wonder at the "eye level" with the C63. That's eye level with the C63 of today, not the C63 of 2020, which could have 500+.

But BMW do sandbag...

I still have hope that there will be a 6MT. If not, I will have a 6MT on lease that I can just keep.
