E90/92: remove bumper to install trailer hitch?

I'm getting ready to install a hitch on my 08 E92. it looks like it would be worth the time to remove the bumper so as to get unrestricted access to the mounting locations for the hitch.

if you've installed a hitch, have you removed the bumper, or is that more work than trying to get to the mounting points with the bumper in place?

thanks!

The bumper isn't hard to remove, just about a dozen 8mm fasteners. Take care with the clips on either side, they often tear when you take off the bumper too roughly. They will affect the fit by the tail lights once broken, but not impossible to work with, depending on your level of caring.

That being said, removing the under panels gives a lot of access down there. BMW may have designed the parts to go on without removing the bumper cover. All that is behind it is the plastic carrier and the metal bumper, check some parts diagrams and installation manuals before digging in.

I secured one side of my trailer hitch with the bumper on and the other side after removing the bumper. Remove the bumper, no question about it.
