Oil filter housing socket size?

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone knew the socket size for the oil filter housing? I've been using an adjustable wrench and/or vice grips to unscrew it, but life would be easier with a simple socket that I can just wrench out. Largest I have is a 21mm, but I think it's closer to 27mm. Just wanted to check before I ordered one. Thanks much,

BMW has used 2-3 different oil filter wrenches in the last 10 years or so. Not many people have a 328d and it is obviously using a different wrench from the gassers (which use a big 3"-4" thingy.

My old E46 330xi used something in the 22mm-24mm range, not sure because I no longer have the car. My wife's 328xd is still under warranty and I haven't checked it or changed oil on it - nor will I probably do it since we now live in a condo and can't do work in the garage.

Ever though of just going to Autozone or somewhere that sells sockets and asking to check several for fit?

Thanks for the response. Not being the typical large housing like in the gas'rs, makes it alittle difficult.

Not a bad idea, I'll give it a shot. Thanks

I think you're pretty close with 27mm. I believe that's what I used the last time I changed my oil? Might have been a 28mm...? Can't remember exactly.

My CBS reminder just dinged at me a few days ago so I'll be changing it later this week.

Awesome, I have plenty of miles left before my next change. Do you mind confirming after you do yours?

I've been using a 1 1/16" socket for the past 10 changes with no issues.

MyDixie is correct: 27mm.

My wife took the bus (or walked) today. Took me 10 minutes to check (down elevator, open my car to get locker keys, unstack locker to get to toolbox at the bottom, open wife's car, take cover off and try several sockets, reverse back through process.)
